This is an opportunity under the Pathways Internship Program. The Internship Program provides students enrolled in high schools, colleges, trade schools, and other qualifying educational institutions with paid opportunities to work in agencies anf explore Federal careers while completing their education. Veteran's Preference is applied.

As a Student Trainee (HR Specialist), GS-0299-05, you will perform the following duties:

  • Assisting with Staffing and Recruitment Processes: Supporting the Talent Acquisition and Management Branch (TAM) in activities such as posting job announcements, screening applications, workforce planning, compensation, and recruitment strategies.
  • Classification Support: Helping with the classification of positions, including gathering information and preparing documentation for job evaluations.
  • Onboarding and Orientation: Assisting in the onboarding process for new employees, including preparing orientation materials and coordinating initial training.
  • HR Data Entry and Reporting: Entering HR-related data into systems and generating reports for management or compliance purposes.
  • General Administrative Support: Providing administrative assistance to HR staff, such as preparing correspondence, scheduling meetings, and handling routine inquiries.
  • Ongoing Learning and Professional Development: Actively participate in training sessions, workshops, and on-the-job learning opportunities, seeking feedback and guidance from supervisors and colleagues to enhance knowledge of human resources practices, policies, and procedures. Apply new skills to support the mission of the organization.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Conditions of employment

  1. Selectee will be required to have a background investigation prior to onboarding.
  2. Selectee will be required to sign an agreement that outlines the parameters of the Pathways Internship Program.
  3. Selectee will be required to submit updated transcripts and proof of enrollment upon selection and during the duration of the Internship.
  4. Selectee may be required to serve a 2-year trial period.
  5. Selectee may be required to complete a background investigation prior to onboarding.
  6. Selectee must be at least 16 years of age.

Eligibility:

To be eligible for the Pathways Internship Program, the individual must:

  • Have been accepted for enrollment or be enrolled in and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) at a qualifying educational institution or qualifying career or technical education program that awards a recognized postsecondary credential on a full- or half-time basis.
  • Have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5/4.0
  • External applicants must have at least one year remaining in their program and
  • Internal NSF applicants, with satisfactory performance records, may have less than one year remaining in their program to be eligible.
  • Interns must complete courses within the designated academic term to maintain Pathways eligibility.
Students are not required to enroll over the summer unless they need additional hours to meet the half-time credit requirement.

Qualifications

Applicants must be enrolled at least half-time in an accredited academic institution and have a 2.5 GPA or higher to be eligible for a Pathways Internship Appointment.

In addition to the above appointment requirements, see below qualification requirements:

To qualify at the GS-05 level, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4 level in federal service assisting in staffing, recruitment, or outreach activities for an organization.

Or

Have successfully completed 4 academic years of post-high school leading to a bachelor's degree or equivalent degree.

Or

Have a combination of post high school education and experience that together meet the qualification requirements for this position.

Examples of specialized experience can include:

  • Applying basic staffing principles to hire new talent.
  • Participating in outreach events for an organization.
  • Supporting an organization's special hiring programs processes.
  • Using online recruitment platforms to engage and recruit employees or volunteers.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills & can provide valuable training and experience that translates to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

Education may be substituted for experience as described in "Qualifications."

If qualifying based on education, you must submit TRANSCRIPTS (unofficial copies are acceptable) or a DIPLOMA that verifies that the requirement is met.

All education must be accredited by an accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education in order for it to be credited towards qualifications (particularly positions with a positive education requirement.) Therefore, applicants must report only attendance and/or degrees from schools accredited by accredited institutions recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Additional qualifying educational programs include:

  1. A certificate program from a qualifying educational institution equivalent to at least one academic full-time study, that is part of an accredited post-secondary, technical, trade, or business school curriculum.
  2. A qualifying career or technical education program must be at least one year and awards a recognized postsecondary credential.
  3. A Registered Apprenticeship Program.

Relocation Expenses will not be paid.

Students may be hired for Internship positions at any time during the year and may work full-time or part-time based on office needs.

An appointment under a Pathways Internship is intended to continue through completion of education and work requirements.

The Pathways Internship Program allows students an opportunity to be converted non-competitively to a career-conditional or term position once the student completes all requirements of the Pathways Internship Program. Non-competitive conversion to a permanent or term position is NOT guaranteed. The Intern's eligibility for conversion does not guarantee that the agency will opt for conversion.

It is NSF policy that personnel employed at, or Intergovernmental Personnel Act (IPA) individuals detailed to, NSF are not permitted to participate in foreign talent recruitment programs. Failure to comply with this NSF policy could result in disciplinary action up to and including removal from Federal Service or termination of an IPA assignment and referral to the Office of Inspector General.
