Duties

Help
  • Serves as a Security Guard at a Medical Treatment Facility (MTF) within the Defense Health Agency.
  • Responsible for conducting both internal and external patrols of the hospital, parking lots/garages, ground and providing security service support of outlying clinics.
  • Provides personal security of patients, staff, visitors coming to the MTF and scanning and removal of weapons
  • Conducts initial inquiries for both administrative and potential criminal complaints and reports findings to the MTF Chief of Security/Security Officer/Chief of Guards.
  • Detects suspicious or abnormal behavior; and stops, questions, and detains persons when probable cause exists to do so.
  • Monitors access into restricted areas and intrusion detection system alarms using both manual and electronic methods.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position has specific initial background investigation and periodic re-verification requirements since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age on a recurring basis.
  • This position requires the incumbent to undergo and pass an annual medical exam of physical, emotional, and mental stability.
  • All applicants tentatively selected for this position will be required to submit a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random drug testing, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position has been designated Mission and Weather Essential.
  • This position may require the incumbent to work on any day or shift, including PMs, nights, weekends, holidays, or on an "on call" basis, necessary to meet mission requirements. Incumbent will be required to regularly work 12 hour shifts.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis.
  • This position requires the incumbent not have any criminal convictions, pass a character investigation and possess and maintain a valid state driver's license. Criminal convictions, and/or loss of license may result in removal from the position.
  • This position requires the incumbent to qualify annually with required firearms, scanner metal detector and oleoresin capsicum (OC) pepper spray/foam.
  • The incumbent is required to maintain a high standard of conduct; and will be assessed under the Individual Reliability Program to show they can work effectively under pressure or emergency conditions with a positive attitude toward his/her duties.
  • This position requires incumbent to complete a pre-employment physical, physical agility, and psychological examinations and annual thereafter to ensure the required level of physical health and ability to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position requires incumbent to be trained and maintain current required certifications in CPR techniques and must know first aid.
  • Incumbent must successfully complete security guard training.
  • This position requires incumbent to maintain a high state of appearance and hygiene.
  • This position may require incumbent to wear chemical protection masks, gloves, and other protective equipment and a uniform. Incumbent must not have any medical condition that precludes the wearing of a chemical protective mask and over garments.
  • This position requires that you obtain and maintain a Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes working in a Federal, State, municipal, local, or private protective organization that involved the protection of property against such hazards as fire, theft, damage, accident, or trespass; maintaining order by patrolling perimeters; protecting life; writing and reviewing incident reports; and responding to emergency situations and security breaches.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

    • This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.

This position is subject to screening and update of required immunizations unless exempted for medical or administrative reasons.
    • This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).
    • This position is subject to the Lautenberg amendment to the gun control act of 1968 which makes it a felony for anyone who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence to ship, transport, possess, or receive firearms or ammunition.
    • Incumbent is required to maintain physical conditioning and pass an annual Physical Agility Test (PAT).
    • This position has the following medical requirements; good near and distant vision, ability to distinguish basic colors, and ability to hear the conversational voice.
    • This position is under the Federal Motor Operations medical requirement specified in 5 Code of Federal Regulations Section 930 Part 109; persons operating a Government owned or leased vehicle are subject to medical testing once every 4 years.
