Duties

Help
  • As an intermediate level High Voltage Electrician the incumbent works in situations which provide training to develop skills and knowledge of the occupation.
  • Training capacity, and under normal supervision, performs the full range of work involved in the maintenance, installation and repair of overhead and underground electrical distribution systems energized up to approximately 115KV.
  • Install, replace and/or repair pole, cross-arms, transformer racks and hangers, insulators, breakers, fuses, primary and secondary conductors, transformers, brackets and braces, guy wires.
  • Install underground cable and conduit, runs overhead wire and conduit and attaches to cross-arms and makes electrical connection by splicing and/or other method.
  • Operate standby generator equipment and truck with winch and power-takeoff, posthole digger, aerial boom, and related equipment. Observes all safety rules and regulations.
  • Serve as a member of an electrical team or line crew performing routine installation, maintenance and repairs on electrical distribution systems or substation equipment.
  • Work on power cables, transformers, insulators, and control equipment such as switches and circuit breakers in substations or on distribution lines

  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 11.
  • This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
  • Position requires the incumbent to work in all types of weather.
  • This position requires the incumbent to have and maintain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 6 months.

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) High Voltage Electrician (Motor Vehicle Operator) ~ without more than normal supervision. This includes splicing power cable, replacing a pot head, or pulling a conductor into a conduit or onto a pole cross arms; using a basic knowledge of electrical theory such as Ohm?s law and series and parallel circuits in order to understand and interpret instructions and assignments; understanding commonly used drawings and diagrams of distribution networks and equipment interconnections; working safely in hazardous situations under close guidance of an onsite supervisor; diagnosing commonly encountered problems such as defective switches or blown fuses. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • Physical Effort: The employee is subject to moderately heavy physical effort is exerted as incumbent works aloft on poles, at ground level, and in ground trenches, or manholes. Work requires bending, stooping, climbing and standing for long periods. Coordination of eyes, hands, legs, and body is needed in installing, repairing, and testing electrical equipment in confined spaces such as manholes and overhead structures. Light physical effort is used in reaching, bending, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet and legs to operate hand and foot controls. Moderate physical effort is required in the handling of objects weighing up to 20 pounds and the occasional handling of objects weighing over 50 pounds. Making couplings between vehicle and towed equipment requires moderate physical effort in that heavy chains, bars, hooks, etc. must be lifted and properly secured.
  • Working Conditions: Employee work outside most of the time, subject to extremes of weather conditions and in close proximity to high voltage lines and equipment. Work requires extensive pole climbing with some work in underground facilities. Subject to injury by contact with high voltage lines, broken bones in falls from poles, strains form awkward positions, and less serious cuts and bruises when handling tools and materials. Drives in all types of traffic and weather and is exposed to the possibility of serious accidents. Subject to cuts, bruises, and broken bones as a result of accidents while driving or when loading and unloading vehicles.

White Sands Missile Range is a unique tri-service facility for test, evaluation, research, and assessment of military systems and commercial products. Some attractions specific to Socorro are the Bosque Del Apache and Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuges, Salinas National Monument, the Very Large Array, Etscorn and Magdalena Ridge Observatory's and New Mexico Tech University (Engineering, Research, Science and Technology).
