Duties

Help

Continuously observes swimming area to ensure safety of patrons. Ensures the swimming area is open to patrons at scheduled times and only authorized persons are admitted to the area as well as securing the building a the close of shift. Rescues swimmers in trouble, promptly administers first aid, and calls for medical assistance if and when needed. Warns swimmers of unsafe environmental or health conditions, water hazards, and recommends closing swimming areas until safe conditions prevail. When working at pools, may operate water pumps and control chemical additives to ensure pool water meets specified standards. Ensures that all items on deck are inspected frequently and that necessary repairs are made or reported. Keep all paperwork and records up to date. May perform other related or incidental duties as assigned for the daily operation of the swimming area to include: cleaning of bath houses, wading pools, main pools, pool decks, beach areas, sunbathing areas, etc. Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • This position requires the incumbent to complete a background investigation with favorable results.
  • This position requires completion of installation records checks, state and national criminal background checks may be required for positions that provide lifesaving duties for children.
  • Must obtain an approved, nationally recognized certification in lifesaving and water rescue methods and skills, as well as basic first aid training, and CPR (both child and adult) training within 30 days of employment.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if the position allows for qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.

Qualifying Experience: For pool and aquatic center lifeguards: An approved and current nationally recognized certification in lifesaving and water rescue methods and skills, as well as basic first aid training, and CPR (both child and adult) training is preferred. For coastal lifeguards: In addition to the above, must also have surf rescue techniques training. Must have experience which provides a practical knowledge of swimming activities, rules and procedures and skill in the use and maintenance of various pool and safety equipment is desirable.

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. This position does not allow for education substitution.
