Summary

This is a position in the Clinical Center Nursing Department Sterile Processing Service (SPS) as a Lead Medical Supply Technician in the Clinical Center, Nursing Department (CCND). The Lead Medical Supply Technician is considered to be at the advanced performance level with respect to sterile processing. The Lead will serve as the subject matter expert to guide staff through the proper procedures. The incumbent will provide guidance and technical direction for accomplishing the team's work.

Duties

Help

The major duties for the position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • The incumbent leads a team of Medical Supply Technicians, and is responsible to the supervisor for ensuring that the work assignments of the other employees of the team.
  • The Lead is responsible for all activities that occur in the department during their tour of duty.
  • Resolve simple, informal complaints of employees and refer others to the supervisor.
  • Report to supervisor on performance, progress, and training needs of employees, as well as behavior problems.
  • Decontaminates a full range of reusable surgical instruments, scopes and medical devices used the operating rooms and in-patient care within the Clinical Center.
  • Loads and operates instrument washers, scope cleaning machines, steam, gas, and low-temperature sterilizers, and other cleaning equipment.
  • Documents and maintains sterilization records as specified by NIH and Clinical Center policies and procedures and in accordance with industry standards.
  • Prepares the full range of instrument sets, trays or kits by selecting appropriate method of sterilization.
  • Provides daily cleaning and testing as well as routine care and maintenance of all processing equipment according to policies and procedures and with manufacturer's guidelines to ensure proper functioning and safe operation of medical devices and equipment.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for a Lead Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing) position at the GS-08 level, you must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: processes, assembles, and performs all phases of sterilization for intricate surgical trays and microsurgery instruments for the operating room trays contain large numbers of unique, non-interchangeable, specialized surgical instruments. Decontaminating reusable medical supplies and equipment, using aseptic and sterilization techniques on medical equipment and instruments; compare medical equipment control test results after sterilization period to ensure correct parameters were obtained; testing medical equipment to determine if it is operating correctly after having been cleaned and reassembled, and examining sterilized trays, sets, packs, and equipment from the sterilizer to ensure adherence to organizational manufacturing quality control procedures.

The Lead Medical Supply Technician in the Sterile Processing Service (SPS) operates at an advanced performance level concerning sterile processing. This role involves distributing and prioritizing workload among Medical Supply Technicians according to established workflows and job specializations. Responsibilities include receiving instruments and trays and processing them through decontamination, assembly, and sterilization. The lead assigns tasks to staff based on their experience and training needs. They provide management with information regarding performance issues, assignment changes, and competency reviews. Additionally, this person monitors and reports on the status of work. The incumbent will also support the decontamination, preparation, sterilization, and distribution of reusable medical and surgical instruments and devices throughout the Clinical Center.
