As the Maintenance Mechanic Lead, the incumbent's duties include, but are not limited to

  • The incumbent will performs trades work at the WG-10 journeyman level. Completes maintenance work orders that are approved by the unit Supervisor.
  • The incumbent troubleshoots and performs repairs on various building systems as necessary to maintain normal clinic operations.
  • The incumbent serves as the first responder to second shift calls from facility administration for engineering assistance: Independently triages, troubleshoots, and repairs, or calls in additional resources, as necessary.
  • The incumbent will have Engineering assistance which is required for this position, it can be of multiple trades, including, but not limited to, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC.
  • The incumbent will lead three or more workers to accomplish trades work. Performs work alongside those employees.
  • The incumbent will maintain consistent courteous relationships with the Supervisor and with coworkers, and contributes to the effective operation of the unit.
  • Ability to use or operate tools, equipment, or machines of varying difficulty.
  • The incumbent uses a variety of tools such as saws, hammers, metal, and wood files, augers, shovels, paint brushes, spray guns, torque wrenches, feeler gages, planes, skill saws, radial arm saw, band saws, chain saws, joiners, electric sanders, pantographs, voltmeter, ohmmeter, fuse tester, etc. in the performance of assigned duties.
  • Incumbent is also involved in the moderately skilled use of general and some specialized tools and equipment of various building trades.
  • The incumbent uses power tools of the pipefitting trade. Uses hand and portable
    power tools of the carpentry trade and shop woodworking equipment. The incumbent uses hand and power tools of the plumbing trade.
  • The incumbent makes independent judgments and decisions within the framework of oral and written instructions and accepted trade practices, processes, and procedures while completing assignments. Makes complex setups and adjustments. Makes
    inspections of patient wards to a certain general maintenance of these areas.
  • The incumbent follows local and national safety rules and guidelines, including those pertaining to construction safety and those of the Joint Commission, EPA, OSHA, CEOSH, and other agencies. Provides assistance to the Supervisor to maintain a written preventative maintenance program as specified in the VA Engineering Performance Standard and Policies. Assists the Supervisor in overseeing this program to ensure all equipment and systems within the area of assigned responsibility are maintained according to the established schedule and include appropriate documentation. Ensures that performance contributes to, and directly supports, the performance measures established by the VISN or organizational goals of the medical center.

Physical Requirements: Incumbent must exert moderate to arduous physical effort involving walking, standing, bending, stooping, lifting, working overhead and crawling. Incumbent must be able to to climb ladders and scaffolding and operate bucket truck. Incumbent must be able to lift loads of up to fifty (50) lbs. Frequently, work will be performed in cramped and awkward positions, including crawlspaces. Also, work is performed on interior and exterior of buildings. work performed is of a precise nature requiring prolonged concentration. Incumbent works at times under conditions of extreme stress and must be able to interact effectively with medical staff and perform work in a calm, analytical manner.

Working Conditions: Incumbent works around and with hazardous mechanical and electrical equipment with the potential for serious injury and/or death. Physical agility and dexterity are required while working around equipment. Incumbent works in close quarters and cramped positions, in service rooms, sub-basement areas and other areas with marginal ventilation. Work is performed in engineering and shop areas, laboratories, offices, and many types of patient areas. Incumbent will sometimes be required to work in environments where the hazards of asbestos, burns, exposure to chemicals, radiation, and contagious diseases exist and will be exposed to various elements of weather when working outside. Incumbent must know and follow procedures for working in areas of infection, radiation, and use all appropriate safety tools, clothing, and other personal protective equipment to protect himself/herself, other staff, patients and visitors at all times.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
