  • The Assistant Inspector General for Investigations is the SSA OIG executive responsible for planning, coordination and control of all SSA OIG investigative activity related to criminal fraud, white collar crimes, abuse of public trust, employee integrity and misconduct. Special emphasis is placed upon technical applications for data processing and the use of computers to commit criminal activity.
  • Organizes the headquarters and field establishment as necessary in keeping with program needs and the Inspector General and Commissioner's priorities and initiatives. Manages internal coordination initiatives, keying the investigations programs directly with programs conducted within other organizational components within SSA OIG.
  • Exercises authority as Assistant Inspector General of the Office of Investigations to examine all Agency programs of a direct or support nature with authority to initiate any investigations necessary, determining when to open, its scope and when to close, with recommendations for corrective and proactive measures necessary.
  • While field investigations uncover and dispose of cases of white collar crime, major program fraud and misfeasance and malfeasance against the Government, the incumbent, through continual review of field cases, precedent court decisions, the management information system, liaison with Department of Justice, FBI, GAO, Commissioner and Inspector General initiatives, develops an aggressive proactive program designed to prevent fraud and abuse based upon a lessons learned, state-of-the-art strategy.
  • Develops adequate statements of program goals with necessary resource requirements as guides for the Inspector General and the Commissioner for budgetary hearings and Congressional committees. Serves as expert witness on program objectives, accomplishments and requirements at budget hearings, before Congressional committees.

To be considered minimally qualified for this position, candidates must have had responsible professional experience at a senior level (equivalent to the GS-15 in either the General Schedule (GS) or a comparable pay plan).

  • Complete a Declaration for Federal Employment to determine your suitability for Federal employment, at the time requested by the agency.

  • This position is designated as mobile work. Mobile work means work that is characterized by routine and regular travel to conduct work in customer or other worksites as opposed to a single authorized alternative worksite such as a home or office
  • Must file a Confidential Financial Disclosure Report OGE-278e within 30 days of appointment and annually from then on.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • Age Requirement: This position is covered by the law enforcement officer retirement provisions, 5 U.S.C. 8336 (c) or 5 U.S.C. 8412 (d), and as such is covered by a mandatory age requirement. There is a maximum entry age of the day before your 37th birthday for original appointment into law enforcement officer positions as defined in 5 U.S.C. 8331(20) or 5 U.S.C. 8401(17). This age restriction does not apply to those who have prior Federal service in a covered primary law enforcement position. This position is covered by the special retirement provisions for Federal Law Enforcement Officer (FLEO). Employees subject to special retirement coverage for law enforcement officers must retire at age 57 upon completing 20 years of law enforcement service. If these 20 years of service are not attained at age 57, mandatory retirement is required upon completion of 20 years of service.

To be considered minimally qualified for this position, candidates must have had professional experience at a senior level (equivalent to the GS-15 in either the General Schedule (GS) or a comparable pay plan). Typically, experience of this nature will have been gained at or above the GS-15 grade level in the Federal service or its equivalent with state or local government, the private sector, or non-governmental organizations. Failure to meet this basic qualification requirement and all executive and mandatory technical qualification factors automatically disqualifies an applicant.

NOTE: If you are (1) a member of the SES, (2) have been certified through successful participation in an OPM approved SES Candidate Development Program (SESCDP), or (3) have SES reinstatement eligibility, you should attach proof (e.g., SF-50, Certification by OPM's SES Qualifications Review Board (QRB)) of your eligibility for noncompetitive appointment to the SES. ALL applicants, competitive and noncompetitive, MUST demonstrate how they meet the ECQs' competency and MTQs' technical requirements in their 2-page resume.


MANDATORY TECHNICAL QUALIFICATIONS (MTQs): Your resume should demonstrate accomplishments that would satisfy the mandatory technical qualifications.

1. Demonstrated experience leading or supervising a criminal investigative program, such as an office, division, or region at the local, state, or federal level, including the development and implementation of investigative policies, procedures, and processes to align with stakeholder priorities and achieve efficiency and effectiveness.

2. Demonstrated experience leading or supervising effective investigations that comply with governing laws, regulations, quality standards, and internal policies and procedures, and incorporate innovative measures and techniques to increase enforcement impact and deterrent effect.

EXECUTIVE CORE QUALIFICATIONS (ECQs): In addition to the Mandatory Technical Qualification requirements listed above, all applicants will be assessed for executive competency against the following five mandatory ECQs. If your 2-page resume does not reflect demonstrated evidence of the ECQs and MTQs, you may not receive further consideration for the position.
