Duties

Help
  • Perform the full range of maintenance and repairs on target equipment.
  • Use multi-meters, oscilloscopes, logic probes, pressure gages, and shop bench test mock-ups to test and troubleshoot hydraulic, electric and electro-mechanical devices.
  • Perform organizational and operator level maintenance on tower VHF and FM communications equipment.
  • Perform repairs of non-electrical components of target systems using basic mechanical, plumbing and pipefitting, and metal-working skills.
  • Operate and maintain up to 1 ton, 4WD pickup trucks, with or without a trailer (up to 20foot).

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • May be required to work nights, weekends and holidays. May be required to work overtime during peak mission periods.
  • Incumbent is subject to an irregular tour of duty to cover a continuous 24 hour a day, 7 days a week range operation.
  • This is a Term position scheduled to last 3 years. A term position may be extended to a maximum of six years depending upon the needs of management.
  • Term employment is subject to a one year trial period. Employees serving a trial period can be removed with limited appeal rights.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Electrical Equipment Repairer (Motor Vehicle Operator) without more than normal supervision. Ability to perform the most difficult and complex services on a wide variety of electrical equipment; skilled in installing, overhauling, modifying, maintaining, troubleshooting and repairing complex range target systems and maintain electrical devices used on all training ranges; perform electrical maintenance and repairs on subassemblies of the equipment used on the ranges, including electrical, mechanical, pneumonic and hydraulic systems. I am considered an expert for electrical repairs on range target systems and work with a high degree of independence - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • Physical Efforts: Electrical equipment workers are frequently required to stand on hard surfaces for extended periods and bend, stoop, and work in tiring and sometimes uncomfortable positions. They frequently lift and carry, unassisted, items that weigh up to 40 pounds. They are sometimes required to lift and move heavier items with the help of weight handling equipment or with assistance from other workers. Work requires driving and manipulation of equipment gears, brakes, levers, etc., in performing test runs, operation, and movement of equipment. Occasionally lifts, pushes or pulls heavier objects with the aid of other employees or mechanical devices.
  • Working Conditions: Electrical equipment workers typically work in well lighted, heated, and ventilated areas. They are subject to cuts, burns, chemical irritations, strains, electrical shock, and abrasions while repairing and handling equipment. They are exposed to unpleasant conditions from dirt, solvents, fuel, fumes, oil, and grease. They follow prescribed safety practices and use safety equipment such as ear plugs, face shields, gloves, hard hats, glasses, and safety shoes. May occasionally work outdoors. Work environment may require handling of explosive pyrotechnic devices and working in and around exposed high voltages (480 vac).

  • Term Appointment NTE - Position may be filled as a Term Appointment NTE 3 Years. Term appointments may be extended beyond of six (6) years, up to eight (8) years. With DoD approval, Term appointments may be extended beyond eight (8) years.
  • Current permanent Federal employees (to include permanent Army employees) applying for a term appointment will be appointed/converted into a term appointment with no statutory return rights back to a permanent position.
