Duties

Help
  • You will perform the full range of work involved in the repair, overhaul, installation, maintenance and servicing of a variety of commercial and industrial heating, ventilation and air conditioning units and systems.
  • You will troubleshoot, install, repair, and modify special purpose air conditioning, refrigeration, dehumidification controls systems or climate regulation systems that are frequently modified and used to provide specific, critical conditions.
  • You will modify, alter, and repair unusually complex or unique air conditioning and refrigeration systems used to support research, development, test, evaluation, experiments, or comparable special purposes.
  • You will assist with inspections, work progress and quality control of projects.
  • You will repair, troubleshoot, install, and maintain commercial and industrial heating units and systems.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires a candidate to possess and maintain a universal CFC certification. In accordance with section 608 CAA 1990, incumbent must be certified as a universal technician as required by 40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license and any installation or DOD operator's permit requirement for the type of equipment operated.
  • Operates utility vehicles on an incidental basis to transport self, supplies, equipment and other employees to and from work sites.
  • Assures that environmental, safety and housekeeping rules are followed.
  • Must obtain and maintain forklift certification within 180 days of employment.
  • Responds to emergency calls after regular working hours.
  • Protective devices such as but not limited to earplugs, safety glasses, respirators, gloves, hard hat, harnesses and safety shoes are required. Long trousers or coveralls and shirt or tee shirt with sleeves are worn.
  • This position requires a pre-employment physical examination and subsequent annual physical examinations.
  • Mission Essential: Incumbent is required to report for duty during inclement weather, Natural Disasters, and other emergency situations and may be required to remain on duty after the official shift ends.
  • Temporary Duty Travel (TDY) is up to 10% of the time.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Heating and Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic ~ without more than normal supervision; without more than normal supervision utilizing theories of refrigerant principles and theories to repair Air Conditioning and Boiler/Heating equipment; Demonstrate proper work and safety procedures; Interpret work orders, blueprints, building plans to locate and repair HVAC Equipment; Utilize building automated systems to troubleshoot and diagnose problems with direct digital control as well as mechanical components; Determine parts and equipment for the repair and modification of HVAC Systems. Repair, modify and re/program all components for direct digital controls to keep equipment in proper operation. - - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

This position must also possess a current EPA Section 608 Universal Technician Certification. This is a non-negotiable requirement under the Clean Air Act (40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F). Applicants must submit proof of certification with their application. Applications without supporting documentation will be rated ineligible.

  • Physical Effort - Installations and repairs are made from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms. Some parts of systems needing repair are in hard to reach places. Frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, stretching, climbing, and working in uncomfortable positions is required. Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up tools, equipment, and parts that weigh up to 75 pounds. Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing more. Weight handling equipment is available when handling large units.
  • Working Conditions - Work is performed inside and outside, frequently in cramped and awkward positions or in a shop area which is usually adequately heated and ventilated. Works in rooms on concrete floors, and is exposed to gas, ash, dust, and bums from scalding water and contact with heated systems and parts. Work is frequently dirty and greasy. Subject to variable temperatures when working in cold storage rooms and high temperatures when working on boilers. Subject to possible injuries such as cuts, broken bones, bruises, burns, electric shock, falls from ladders, scaffolding and platforms, and dropping moderately heavy items, and possible respiratory disorders due to inhalation of refrigeration gasses.
