Duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for sterile preparation which is accomplished through inspection, assembly, packaging, and terminal sterilization of all trays, sets, and packs for use throughout the facility.
  • ENT plastic set for procedures requiring plastic surgery, micro-surgical eye instruments, and other surgical specialties.
  • These sets contain stainless steel instruments, titanium staples, screws, plates, and other prostheses which require expert care and careful attention.
  • The incumbent assembles and selects the correct sterilizing method for a variety of costly and delicate equipment such as flexible resectoscopes and other flexible and rigid endoscopes.
  • Tests instruments for functionality and assembles instruments in accordance with manufacturer's guidelines.
  • Selects appropriate methods for sterilizing, balancing time constraints with possible detrimental effects of quicker methods.
  • Arranging instruments in the tray in the correct manner, i.e., hinged instruments in open position, ring-handled instruments on a spreader, heavy instruments on the bottom, delicate items pre-wrapped to prevent damage, blades and points properly covered.
  • Strives for a compact, logically arranged package that will permit effective penetration of the required sterilizing medium.
  • Places devices in the tray, selects correct wrapping and labels appropriately.
  • Independently prepares the full range of trays and sets necessary to be used in the wards, clinic areas, dental clinic and surgery.
  • Considers surgery schedules and Clinic schedules along with considering time factors for processing order to determine how many items to stock based on the turnaround time for processing, preparation and frequency of use.
  • Utilize knowledge of equipment, its use, and specific procedures to respond to inquiries about the equipment and potential equipment substitutions.
  • Utilize computers to perform record keeping, tracking operations. Processes emergent requests, prepares tray lists, and updates files as required.
  • Conducts inventory of all sterilized trays checking package integrity and expiration dates.
  • Transport RMD within facility and outside facility using approved SOPs and follows state and national regulations while driving a motor vehicle.
  • Ability to manage, interact and deal with individuals of varying backgrounds.
  • Ability to direct staff and manage tasks to be completed.
  • Ability to oversee and supervise all aspects of decontamination, preparation, sterilization, Endoscopy, monitoring, and distribution of RMD.
  • Ability to perform a full range of supervisory duties, including assigning, planning and evaluating work, recommending awards, approving leave, identifying training needs, and resolving staff issues.
  • Detailed knowledge of complex endoscopic instrumentation (flexible scopes), and use of Leak Tester, Scope Buddy, drying cabinets and Medivators to High Leve Disinfect of flexible scopes. Certified Endoscope Preprocessor (CER) certification and experience is preferred. CER certification is required within one year of hiring to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to pre-clean, test, decontaminate, inspect, disinfect and/or sterilize, transport, and store endoscopes in accordance with industry standards, guidelines and regulations, and manufacturers' instructions for use.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Mon-Thurs 6am-430pm/ Tues- Fri 6am-430pm and Mon-Thurs 7am-530pm/Tues-Friday 7am-530pm. Schedule will be adjusted on needs of the Veteran Affairs to provide medical care to Veterans.
Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases. When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).
Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year)
Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience.
Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.
Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.
Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA
Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement)

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Experience and or Education.
    • Experience. Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work; OR
    • Education. One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position; OR
    • Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.
    • Foreign Education. To be creditable, education completed outside the U.S. must have been submitted to a private organization that specializes in the interpretation of foreign educational credentials and such education must have been deemed at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U. S. programs.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

Grade Determinations: GS-08 Lead Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing)
  • Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level.
  • Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
    • Ability to read and interpret written procedures and select appropriate action in order to instruct staff in correct procedures and protocols for completing assignments.
    • Ability to communicate orally and in writing to ensure staff compliance with written directives, rules and regulations.
    • Skill in interpersonal relationships in dealing with employees, team leaders, and managers.
    • Knowledge of sterility principles in order to instruct staff on decontamination procedures.
    • Ability to lead individuals, manage priorities, and schedule work assignments.
  • Assignment. The Lead MST at this level oversees a work team that includes at least one MST position that is above the full performance. Distributes and prioritizes workload among employees in accordance with established workflow and/or job specializations. Assures an even distribution of the workload. When necessary, revises work schedules to meet anticipated and unanticipated changes in the workload. Assigns tasks as necessary to provide new employees with the experience and training required to perform decontamination of scopes and instrumentation in the work area. Monitors and reports on the status of work. Ensures SOPs and SPS mandates are followed during the performance of workflow. Reviews or spot checks scope processing work to ensure completed work meets supervisors' instructions (e.g., work sequences, procedures, methods, and deadlines). Assesses the quality and quantity of work by reviewing the cleaning, reprocessing, and distribution of scope medical equipment, material and instrumentation. Provides information to management officials concerning performance issues, assignment changes and task completion. Instructs employees on work-related activities, policies, procedures and goals
Preferred Experience: Experience handling contaminated reusable medical devices/equipment and properly wear of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Sterile Processing Certification preferred

Physical Requirements :Level of physicality The employee usually stands and moves from one part of the room to another while performing duties. There is frequent requirement for lifting supply tote bins, baskets or instruments sets weighing up to 50 pounds from the floor to chest level. The incumbent regularly pushes loaded instrument carts weighing as much as several hundred pounds. Tension and stress are induced by the critical nature of producing work results on a pre- established time frame as well as in emergent situations.
