This position is located in the Engineering Department of the Gallup Indian Medical Center, Gallup, NM. The incumbent serves as a Journeyman Level Maintenance Mechanic capable of independently managing many complex electrical and mechanical tasks, plus other tasks that are assigned by the Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor.

The incumbent serves as a Journeyman Level Maintenance Mechanic capable of independently managing many complex electrical and mechanical tasks, plus other tasks that are assigned by the Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor.
The IHS is required by law to give absolute preference to qualified applicants who meet the Secretary of the Interior's definition of Indian for
appointment to vacancies within the IHS in accordance with established IHS policy as outlined in the Indian Health Manual Part 7, Chapter 3.
Maintains records of supplies and repair parts on hand and recording those used in maintenance and repair functions.
Instructs and demonstrates proper operation and utilization of equipment and controls.
Installs, modifies, repairs, troubleshoots, loads, and tests new and existing electrical systems, lies, circuits, fixtures, controls, and equipment as pertains to the secondary distribution system panels, switchgear, power, and control circuits, electrical wiring, high intensity lighting systems, fire alarm systems, electronic circuits, pneumatic controls, etc.
Installs, repairs, and performs preventative maintenance on water distillation stills, reserve osmosis, water softener units, dishwasher, kitchen equipment's, autoclave-sterilizers of various sizes, stem and electrically operated.
Change HVAC units with all types of freon and be able to troubleshoot heating furnaces, air conditioning units. Checks and repairs negative air pressure in isolation rooms.

This is a designated position covered by Public Law 101-630, requiring contact or control over Indian children. This position requires the successful completion of a federal background investigation as a condition of employment.
