Duties

Help
  • Maintains training products in support of Military Preventive Medicine, with special focus on Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations, and Defense Occupational and Environmental Health Reporting System (DOEHRS).
  • Writes lesson plans and other elements of Program of Instructions (POIs), information papers and other staff actions, and technical documents.
  • Identifies elements of training required for technical proficiency according to performance standards, military occupational specialty, area of concentration, functional position, grade level, and conditions under which performance occurs.
  • Teaches the full spectrum industrial hygiene topics related to the anticipation, recognition, evaluation, prevention, and control of those environmental factors or stresses that may arise among workers or among citizens of the community.
  • Provides technical support to branch and promotes optimum use of technology in all training.
  • Assists with equipment and laboratory preparation and maintenance by preparing materials for daily instruction and performing preventive maintenance checks and services; and calibration.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 25% of the time.
  • Within six months of appointment incumbent must possess and maintain T2COM (TRADOC) approved Instructor Training Certification and Support Cadre Training Certification; attain adjunct faculty appointment.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education AND experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Basic Requirement for Industrial Hygienist position:

Degree: Bachelor's or graduate (or higher level) degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science. The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

OR

Related Degree:
Bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene. The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. For engineering degrees to be acceptable, the curriculum must be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum.

OR

Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH).

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Specialized Experience:
One year of specialized experience which includes industrial hygiene sampling instrumentation; performing analyses associated with industrial hygiene evaluations; technical report writing; and preparing and presenting training in industrial hygiene matters. Identifying and evaluating conditions which may be hazardous to worker's health, assessing workplace hazards, evaluating and recommending controls of industrial hygiene problems. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).

OR

Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as Industrial Hygiene, Industrial Health, Occupational Safety, Safety Sciences, Occupational Safety and Environmental Health, Toxicology or Occupational Health Sciences.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience:
A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
