Duties

Help
  • Performs comprehensive repair, overhaul, maintenance, and servicing of large industrial air-conditioning and refrigeration systems, including chillers, cooling towers, heat exchangers, pumps, and related control equipment.
  • Works with systems that utilize mechanical compression, vapor compression, absorption, steam-jet, and air-cycle methods to cool, heat, humidify, dehumidify, filter, and circulate air.
  • Maintains and repairs domestic and commercial refrigeration units, walk-in coolers, freezers, dehumidifiers, and ventilating systems.
  • Diagnoses malfunctions, determines root causes, and performs corrective repairs to restore full system functionality.
  • Operates and monitors the central control and data system (CCDS) to control and monitor temperatures, pressures, and the status of major equipment 1a items such as air conditioning systems and high pressure boilers.

Qualifications

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) AIR CONDITIONING EQUIPMENT MECHANIC ~ without more than normal supervision. To meet the screen out element applicants should document experience where they are able to perform common duties as appropriate. I can perform the full maintenance cycle of various air conditioning and heating equipment such as compressors and motors. I am able to perform tests on HVAC equipment to replace defective parts. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed.

  • Physical Effort: The mechanic frequently carries and sets-up parts and equipment that weight up to 50 pounds. Repairs and installations are made from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms where the parts of the system worked on are frequently in hard-to-reach places; therefore, requiring extended periods of stooping, stretching, bending, and kneeling.
  • Working Conditions: Work is frequently dirty and greasy; variable temperatures occur when working in cold storage rooms; employee is subject to possible injuries, such as cuts, bruises, burns, and electrical shock. The employee is exposed to possible respiratory disorders due to inhalation of refrigerant gases. Employee must wear personal protective equipment as required and as directed to include but not limited to protective clothing, eye/face/head protection, hearing protection, hand/foot protection, respiratory protection, etc.

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
