Duties

Help

If selected for this position as a GS-0018-13 Safety and Occupational Health Manager, your duties may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Responsible for providing dedicated safety and health support to Office of Research Facilities (ORF) operations under a Memorandum of Understanding between ORS and ORF.
  • Manages a comprehensive safety program, including OSHA compliance, NIH specifics program requirements, and industrial hygiene programs for assigned ORF facilities covering large, complex industrial operations involving a wide variety of chemical agents, physical hazards, and industrial processes.
  • Designs, develops, and delivers occupational health and safety training programs for Central Utility Plant (CUP) employees working in industrial facilities, maintenance operations, and construction environments.
  • Plans, schedules, and directs comprehensive safety surveys of industrial facilities, offices, and other work areas for the purpose of identifying potential risks and hazards associated with a variety of environments and occupations.
  • Provides expert consultation to ORF management, engineers, facility managers, and technical personnel on specific safety and health issues including work practices, procedures, and their relationship to facility design and operations.
  • Functions as a recognized authority in industrial and facility safety and serves as a communication link between facility operations personnel and professionals in the field of occupational safety and health.

  • Physical agility and stamina are required to conduct comprehensive facility inspections in various environmental conditions.
  • The work involves extended periods of standing, walking, climbing stairs and ladders, working at heights, entering confined spaces, and accessing difficult work areas during surveys of industrial facilities.
  • The work requires the employee to carry sampling equipment (which may weigh 20-30 pounds).

Qualifications

You qualify at the GS-13 level, if you meet one of the following qualification requirements:

You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: 1) comprehensive safety and industrial hygiene programs for complex industrial operations; 2) conducting safety surveys and compliance inspections to identify hazards and ensure compliance with OSHA regulations and other Federal safety standards; 3) developing and delivering occupational health and safety training programs; 4) providing expert consultation to management on safety and health matters including facility design and operations; 5) preparing technical reports and policy recommendations based on safety assessments and regulatory requirements.
