Help

This Medical Care Transportation Technician position performs basic and advanced life support procedures.

Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Responds to on-site accidents and other emergencies involving injury and illnesses, sometimes encountering situations which may be life threatening;
  • Determines and prioritizes appropriate medical treatment/procedures and need for additional assistance;
  • Performs triage and take / records patient's vital signs as needed;
  • Performs physical examinations and obtains patient history;
  • Assess status of patient;
  • Provides and gathers information on the human body structure, function, illnesses and diseases;
  • Supports patient charting and goals for the purpose of communicating with the patient and nursing/medical staff members;
  • Makes an independent preliminary assessment of the patient's condition and selects from a variety of prescribed protocols;
  • Determines if and how the patient can be moved and to which facility the patient should be transported;
  • Prioritizes treatments for patients having multiple problems and employs a variety of advanced emergency medicine techniques, methods, and equipment during transport;
  • Administers basic and advanced life support care;
  • Performs invasive and non-invasive procedures on patients with life threatening and non-life-threatening conditions;
  • Responds to cardiac and respiratory emergencies;
  • Performs cardiac monitoring and defibrillation;
  • Provides fluid resuscitation by IV and manages trauma injuries, bleeding, and post-traumatic shock;
  • Assists with children and administers medications as appropriate;
  • Observes, records, and monitors patient's condition and effect of medication;
  • Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals;
  • Operates or utilizes various emergency vehicles and emergency/medical equipment, tools and supplies;
  • Conducts a complete examination of the patient's condition to determine the nature, extent, and seriousness of the injury or illness;
  • Performs other duties as necessary.
Work Schedule: Paramedics work rotating 12- hour shifts, including holidays, and are subject to occasional recall to maintain adequate coverage of the Emergency Department and ambulance service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Mandatory overtime may be required due to run times that may extend beyond normal scheduled work hours.

  • Physical Requirements: The Medical Care Transportation Technician work involves extended periods of heavy moving and lifting of patients in a variety of situations. Generally, the work requires recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, and positioning of patients, frequently under adverse conditions or in confined areas. Paramedics may be required to spend prolonged periods in protective breathing apparatus and protective clothing during chemical, nuclear, biological, or hazardous materials incidents/exercises.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 05/22/2026.

Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-9 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-7. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:

  • Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-7 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Work that involves a wide variety of technical emergency medical steps which include examining patients, proper equipment and medicine selection/operation, operating emergency vehicles, using emergency communication equipment, identifying the nature and extent of a patient's condition or seriousness of the injuries or illness, and assessing the patient's emergency care requirements. Responding to most emergency conditions using established approaches that relate to the diagnosed conditions, makes choices recognizing the difference in symptoms and illnesses, and determines the best approach for treatment. Handling emergency situations and decisions that involve complicating factors which sometimes hinder use of standard procedures, and normal alternatives, and must adapt to specific emergency and clinical situations. Such factors include changing medical conditions, seriousness of the illness/injury, mental and physical capacity of the patient, procedure alternatives, or special procedures/decisions to meet specific emergency situations. The work performed requires variations of technical factors to accommodate the patient's condition, extending standard methods, and changing conventional methods to produce acceptable results. OR,
  • Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have two full years of graduate experience or a master's degree. One year of full time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one year of full time study. Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required in those instances here it directly related to the work.
