This position is located within the Facilities Management Service (FMS) section of the Eastern Colorado Health Care System (ECHCS), Denver, CO, 80220. The maintenance mechanic performs a variety of tasks involved in the upkeep of buildings, grounds and related structures, fixtures, and utilities. The duties are performed within at least two of the following trades: painter, plumber, carpenter, pipefitter, electrical equipment repair, and plaster.

Duties

Help

Major duties include but not limited too:

  • Performs duties of a journeyman carpenter, including framing and drywall, mudding, taping and plaster. The duties include: renovation of existing structures involving the construction of new metal stud-dry wall partitions, door openings with frames, installing doors with all hardware including locksets and closers; installing floor tile, vinyl floor covering and trim and finish work such as baseboards both wood and vinyl; carpeting repairs
  • Perform maintenance functions to support the assigned work area, such as furniture repairs, repair damaged vinyl wall covering, paint and touchup rooms, caulk around plumbing fixtures, replace lost/damaged outlet covers, replace broken nuts and bolts after determination of proper size, replace casters on over-bed tables and bed side tables and chairs, replace hand rail covers on beds, adjustments to wheelchairs, adjustments to door hardware, and similar activities.
  • Installs carpet tile, VCT or sheet vinyl flooring as needed
  • Installs signs, warning devices on walls, posts and other surfaces and structures throughout the assigned buildings
  • Performs individual work orders to install specific furniture items, perform specific modifications on existing modular furniture, repairs furniture and furnishings displaying mechanical damage or malfunction, and checks the safety and proper functioning. Perform specific modifications on existing modular furniture.
  • Installs curtain tracks and door closers adjusting closers as needed through out the facility. Installs and removes various types of dispensers (i.e., soap, towel, glove racks, toilet paper, sanitary napkins, etc.) and other wall hung equipment.
  • Moves furniture as part of installation or set-up activities, and performs the various tasks of a maintenance worker.
  • Keeps storage areas clean and orderly and organized in such a manner that an accurate operating inventory can be accomplished easily and without advanced notification.
  • Installs all accessory items to render a job site complete and ready for use or occupancy..
  • Completes work order requests as assigned.
  • Installs and makes minor repairs to furniture. Installs ergonomic devices and assists with adjustments.
  • Assists in snow removal to include operating vehicles for snow plowing, snow blowers and shoveling.
  • Measures, cuts and installs wood and metal shelving, ceiling tile, floor tile and drywall which requires accurate tolerances within 1/8"; installs wall mounted hardware, bulletin boards and window shades; patch and smooth walls in preparation for painting.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 05/20/2026.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The work requires a considerable amount of standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring and/or uncomfortable positions. The incumbent may work from ladders and scaffolding. When operating equipment, the worker may be under a great deal of strain from constant reaching, bending, turning, and moving of hands, arms, feet, legs, and by the vibration and jerking of the equipment. The incumbent carries, lifts, and handles parts and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and may occasionally exceed 50 pounds.
Working Conditions: The work is performed inside and outside with exposure to all kinds of weather. The work area may be dirty, wet, dusty, and greasy, with inadequate lighting, heat, or ventilation. Incumbent is subject to cuts, abrasions, burns, broken bones, electrical shock, infections, bites, exposure to inhalation or harmful chemical fumes, irritation of eyes, skin and respiratory tract, and the hazards of operating power tools and equipment. Discomfort is encountered when wearing protective clothing, gloves, or eye goggles.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
