Help

  • Oversees all functions related to healthcare providers' professional credentials supporting all divisions of the VAMC in accordance with VHA Credentialing and Privileging (C&P), Directives, VA Handbooks, Policies, Memos, and Notices; The Joint Commission (TJC) Standards and State and Federal Regulations.
  • Works collaboratively with local and VISN leadership to identify and/or implement best practices and advising VAMC leadership of all program requirements pertaining to the C&P program.
  • Ensures quality assurance and provide oversight for the VAMC C&P program.
  • Serves as the VAMC's Senior Technical Advisor and as the primary consultant and liaison to the VISN C&P Officer.
  • Outlines VAMC C&P program goals and objectives, identifies risks, supervises all VAMC C&P employees, ensures training and education, and completes second level reviews as appropriate.
  • Determines appropriate actions, including those resulting from VISN and local level reviews, initial and recredentialing processes, including, but not limited to primary source verifications; reporting and data trends, identified issues that require further review, and electronic credentialing database and clinical privilege maintenance.
  • Attends committee meetings and presents providers' credentials, clinical practice histories and red flags.
  • Documents and composes committee minutes, privileging requests and/or actions malpractice payments, tort claims and adverse actions, Focused Professional Practice Evaluation (FPPE) and Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluation (OPPE) reviews and completion timeframes.
  • Contributes to development of local policies; ensures program compliance.
  • Tracks State Licensing Board reporting.
  • Manages VetPro access levels and training.
  • Serves as the Point of Contact (POC) and SME for credentialing updates, Human Resources, providers and hiring services; telehealth teams to ensure C&P requirements are completed prior to patient care activity.
  • Serves as the VAMC SME on the following topics, including, but not limited to credentialing of licensed independent practitioners (LIP) and Non-LIPs; privileging and privileging related matters including focused and ongoing professional practice; adverse privileging actions; Reporting to the National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB); and reporting to State Licensing Boards (SLB).
  • Monitors and audits the VAMC C&P program utilizing VetPro reports, mandatory auditing and reporting tools.
  • Monitors C&P program resources to ensure programs are appropriately staffed including succession planning, mentoring and training of new C&P specialists, and preparation and implementation of action plans when vulnerabilities are identified.
  • Serves as liaison and partner with Human Resources Service programs for common program goals and issues including, but not limited to, provider onboarding, provider exit reviews and assessments, privileging actions, and guidance related to clinical performance concerns.
  • Validates processes that are working efficiently and according to plan to identify dysfunctional process issues as early as possible during the implementation phase. Makes recommendations for corrective action for adoption.
  • Ensures all mandatory reviews and recommendations are documented in the electronic credentialing database; manages facility accounts.
  • Ensures appointed licensed providers maintain an active enrollment.
  • Sets and adjusts short and long-term priorities; assesses staffing needs; plans work to be accomplished.
  • Hears and resolves issues and complaints from employees, referring group grievances and more serious unresolved complaints to higher-level officials as needed.
The Position Description (PD) associated with this position is currently undergoing a classification consistency review in accordance with Office of Personnel Management (OPM) guidelines. This process ensures that similar positions across the VA and federal government are classified consistently based on duties and responsibilities. As a result of this review, the final job title, occupational series, and/or grade level may be adjusted, including the possibility of a lower grade if the duties support that determination. If this occurs, selections will be notified and given the opportunity to accept or decline the revised offer. If a downgrade occurs after entry on duty, prior pay may be subject to overpayment review and potential debt; you will be notified of any determination and your rights.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:30 am - 4:00 pm, subject to change based on the needs of the facility.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 05/19/2026.

Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-12 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-11. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.

Individual Occupational Requirement: Applicants who meet the Individual Occupational Requirements described below are fully qualified for the specified entry grade and must also meet the specialized experience and/or education requirements.

Undergraduate and Graduate Education:

  • with a major study -- hospital administration, public health administration, or related fields such as business or public administration with course work in health care administration.
OR,

Specialized Experience:
  • Progressively responsible analytical or administrative, or clinical management or supervisory experience in the health care field. This work may have been performed in an operating health care facility or a higher organizational echelon with advisory or directional authority over such facilities. Work must have involved a close working relationship with facility managers and analysis and/or coordination of administrative, clinical, or other service activities, and provided knowledge of the following:
  • Missions, organizations, programs, and requirements of health care delivery systems.
  • Regulations and standards of various regulatory and credentialing groups.
  • Government-wide, agency, and facility systems and requirements in various administrative areas such as budget, personnel, and procurement.

Special Provision for Inservice Placement:
  • Successful completion of an agency-sponsored on-the-job training program may be substituted for qualifying experience, provided it included a formal individualized training plan. Such a training program must have been conducted in an operating health care system and included:
  • Assignments providing a knowledge of basic health system administration philosophies, practices, and procedures, and basic government administrative policies and requirements.
  • Practical assignments providing an opportunity to apply health system administration skills and principles (as the individual progresses, work assignments must be characteristic of the grade level to which he or she is assigned); and
  • Oversight by an experienced health system administrator with periodic evaluation of the individual's progress and appropriate adjustment of the training program.

Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-12 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:
  • Written communication to organize ideas and present findings in a logical manner for responses, reports, papers, presentations and meetings with a diverse group of employees and leadership.
  • Independently monitors the effectiveness, efficiency, and compliance of the facility program.
  • Utilizes judgment and discretion in determining the intent and in interpreting and revising existing policies and regulatory guidance for use within the VAMC.
  • Recognition of the different functions and motivations of various employees and groups in the health care delivery system and ability to communicate effectively with each to gather information, present recommendations, and coordinate services.
  • Analyze problems and present both written and oral recommendations taking into consideration of the wide range of factors and requirements which affect the management of the health care delivery system.
