Help

As a Chief Topographic Data Services within the National Geospatial Program (NGP), some of your specific duties will include:

  • Supervises Topographic Data Services staff, including permanent and temporary employees and manages daily operations such as performance reviews, travel, attendance, leave, and purchasing.
  • Develops and provides strategic direction for major initiatives like the 3D Elevation Program (3DEP) and 3D Hydrography Program (3DHP) within the 3D National Topography Model.
  • Builds relationships with data providers and private-sector geospatial firms to support 3DEP and 3DHP.
  • Reviews and evaluates programs for alignment with NGP, USGS, and departmental goals.
  • Ensures NGP participation in interagency geospatial initiatives.
  • Provides input and deliverables for leadership on budget, staffing, and planning activities.
Conditions of Employment for this Position:
As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a 1 year probationary period during which your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated.

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?

  • If selected for this position, you may be required to file one or more financial statements upon reporting and annually, some of which may be subject to public disclosure.
  • Prior to appointment, the selectee will be required to take and pass, at Federal expense, a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use. From thereon, the individual may be subject to random drug testing.
  • Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment. Individuals who have delinquent account balances from a previous Government charge card will be required to satisfy their existing obligation before a new card can be issued.
  • A background investigation will be required for this position. Continued employment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination.

Qualifications

For GS-1301:

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Physical Scientist, all grade levels.

A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.

**OR

B. A combination of education and experience--education equivalent to one of the majors shown in "A" above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science, engineering, or mathematics) that included at least 24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science and/or related engineering science as described above, plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above.

For GS-0150:
BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Geographer, all grade levels.

  1. Degree in geography; or related physical or social science such as geology, meteorology, economics, statistics, sociology, anthropology, political science, history, cartography, computer science, urban studies, or planning that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields.
  2. A combination of education and experience-- courses equivalent to a major in geography, or a related field that included at least 24 semesters hours in geography or related fields, as shown in "A" above, plus appropriate experience and/or additional education. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above.

For GS-15:

In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet the following to qualify for the GS-15 level:

One year of appropriate professional experience the GS-14 level in the Federal service managing complex geospatial activities focused on foundation level topographic data sets. Examples of such experience could include managing Nation-scale topographic data programs, overseeing complex geospatial data production, implementing data integration and modernization initiatives, leading interagency of multi-partner geospatial projects, managing complex acquisition or contracting activities, applying advanced geospatial analysis and technology, and providing strategic leadership and program direction.
