Duties

Help

If selected for this position, you will serve as the Secretary to the United States Attorney, providing a variety of technical and administrative support services. Typical work assignments will include:

  • Exercises exclusive control over the U.S. Attorney's calendar for all appointments, meetings, engagements, and conferences with complete authority.
  • Reads, screens and controls incoming mail.
  • Screens telephone calls and visitors desiring to speak to the U.S. Attorney.
  • Composes a variety of written material.
  • Makes travel arrangements for the U.S. Attorney.
  • Helps coordinates a variety of media events with, or on the behalf of the U.S. Attorney.
  • Arranges conferences and meetings for the U.S. Attorney.
  • Provides legal assistant support for cases handled by the U.S. Attorney

Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

  • You must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
  • You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable.
  • If selected, you may be required to complete a one year probationary period.
  • Time-in-Grade: Federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement.
  • You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement and before placement in the position.

Qualifications

GS-9: To be eligible at the GS-9 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-8 level

Specialized Experience: One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-8 level. Specialized experience is defined as performing a wide range of high-level secretarial and administrative support functions in a legal environment. Examples include: reviewing all outgoing correspondence prepared for the supervisor's signature, e.g., action documents, case files, legal documents, and reports; composing a variety of written material for the supervisor's signature; developing a variety of recurring reports and documents which involve obtaining information from staff, subject files or other sources; arranging conferences and meetings for the supervisor; and organizing electronic case files, discovery materials, exhibits and other legal documents.


To be qualified, you must type at least 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors. (A typing test may later be required.)

This is a temporary assignment/promotion not-to-exceed four (4) year and may be ended at any time or extended for up to five (5) years without further competition at the discretion of management and based on the needs of the District. At the end of the temporary assignment/promotion, the employee will be returned to a comparable position in series, grade, and duty location to his/her permanent position.

Payment of relocation expenses will not be authorized.
