Help

As a Chemist within the Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Make chemical observations, calculations, risk assessments, and analyses.
  • Collects, manages, disseminates, and archives scientific information.
  • Make geological observations, computations, measurements, and contribute to interpretations.
  • Prepare or lead technically authoritative reports and deliver presentations.
  • Communicate a broad range of information regarding chemical and geological data to colleagues, collaborators, partners, and the general public.

Physical Demands
The work is conducted in several types of environments including a typical office; warehouse where incumbent is subjected to long periods of standing, stooping, lifting heavy items, and reaching; laboratory with possible exposure to hazardous chemicals; outside staging areas from docks to beaches and wetlands; and aboard research vessels (from skiffs to deep ocean vessels). The work requires good health, strength, balance, coordination, and ability to work long hours, sometimes under harsh weather and sea conditions.

Work Environment
Most work is accomplished in an office, laboratory, warehouse, sea-going research vessel, or nearshore beach or wetland environment. As much as three months of each year may be spent on board a research vessel or in the field in an environment of extreme noise, fumes, and exposure to harsh weather and sea conditions.

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?
  • Driver's License/Driving Record - You will be required to operate a government-owned or -leased vehicle in the performance of your official duties. Applicants for this position must meet the following requirements: (1) possess a valid State license, and (2) possess a safe driving record. If selected, you will be required to provide proof of a valid State license & a copy of your driving record.
  • Pre-Employment Medical - Taking and passing a pre-employment medical examination at Federal expense is required due to the physical demands of this job.
  • Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment. Individuals who have delinquent account balances from a previous Government charge card will be required to satisfy their existing obligation before a new card can be issued.

Qualifications

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Chemist, all grade levels.

A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics. **OR B. A combination of education and experience-course work equivalent to a major as shown in "A" above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering), including at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent of physics, plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. For GS-12:
In addition to the basic education requirement stated above, the applicant must have one year of appropriate professional experience in chemistry that is equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service. Examples of such experience include:
  • Independently performing the full range of chemical analyses and tests.
  • Receives samples or analytical requests that consist primarily of difficult or unusual chemical problems.
  • Determines approach and methods to use.
This work typically involves conventional methods & techniques though it requires going beyond clear precedents, and requires adapting methods to the problems at hand and interpreting findings in terms of their scientific significance. At this level, Chemists have a very good knowledge of the principles of chemistry and their application, and the ability to independently perform scientific work of considerable difficulty.

Conditions of Employment for this Position:
As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a 1-year probationary period during which your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated.

  3. Describe your experience analyzing and interpreting marine chemical/geochemical and geologic data. Include examples of how you have integrated multiple datasets to support research investigations. Also explain how you communicate scientific findings, including the types of products you have prepared (such as reports, figures, manuscripts or GIS deliverables) and the audiences you have presented to (such as professional meetings, technical briefings, or stakeholder groups).
  4. Describe your experience producing, compiling, processing, and reviewing for quality, laboratory chemical, geochemical, and geological analytical data and field records, including preparation of associated databases and technical reports. In your response, note the tools, standards, and workflows you used and developed, data quality management experience, and the level of independence with which you performed these tasks.
  5. Describe your experience documenting and reporting technical activities, with an emphasis on laboratory practices, such as standard operating procedures (SOPs), data quality, analytical process deviations and developments, metadata, and research outputs are conveyed in appropriate detail to a variety of audiences. In your response, explain your role in the preparation of chemical, geochemical and geological analytical SOPs, the delivery of complex analytical data and associated metadata in written format, and the production of quality and safety procedures documentation. Include examples of the types of audiences targeted and how you ensured work was completed on time and met quality standards.
