This position is located at VA Eastern Colorado Health Care | Veterans Affairs. The Pharmacy Technician will provide and support operations of the Community Care Clinical Pharmacist. The technician will function as a resource to pharmacy staff, Non-VA and community care partners, and the medical center regarding community care prescriptions; using independent judgement to perform a full range of duties.

Assigned activities include but not limited to:

  • Receives faxed, mailed, electronically prescribed, or delivered prescriptions written by Non-VA providers and processes all received prescriptions to include assessment of appropriateness and eligibility, prioritizing urgent prescriptions first.
  • Utilizes electronic health record, or other related sites to determine authorization and eligibility of Non-VA care by VA ECHCS.
  • Communicates with patients concerning prescriptions received from unauthorized provider visits and handles prescriptions appropriately.
  • Reviews authorized prescriptions for appropriateness using Pharmacy Technician knowledge, as well as knowledge concerning the national drug formulary and local VA formulary requirements.
  • Communicates with Non-VA providers and staff to request clarification of prescriptions or medication changes due to VA formulary and forwards all changes and clarifications to a licensed pharmacist to receive from the Non-VA representative and documents these actions.
  • Initiates the non-formulary/prior authorization process with the Non-VA provider and records needed documentation in electronic health record.
  • Follows up via phone and/or fax with Non-VA Provider regarding initiated communications concerning non-formulary/prior authorization medications, clarifications, or medication change requests frequently, and documents in electronic health record.
  • Assists the Community Care Clinical Pharmacist with inbound and outbound phone calls relating to community care that do not require a pharmacists' knowledge.
  • Utilizes pharmacy information systems to answer patient or provider questions related to status of their prescription(s), completion date, package tracking, etc.
  • Monitors community care pharmacy voicemail regularly throughout shift and addresses messages promptly.
  • Transfers calls or messages to the Community Care Clinical Pharmacist as appropriate.
  • Documents phone conversations in electronic health record for future reference if appropriate.
  • Accurately interprets,, and prepares prescriptions with appropriate medications and or medica supplies for pharmacist verification.
  • Maintains work areas in a clean and orderly condition by assuring that all stock and equipment are in assigned places and all shelves and counters are free Of dust and debris in order to create optimal work areas.
  • Assures drugs and supplies are appropriately stored and secured according to USP and VA guidelines, including the storage of high-risk, 100k a-like sound a-like, hazardous, controlled substances, corrosive chemical, flammable liquids, and refrigerated items.
  • Receives, checks, rotates, and places in stock all items received from pharmacy procurement section and identifies and reconciles any discrepancies to assure correct items have been received.
  • Utilizes automation dispensing equipment available to the pharmacy staff following all safety and QA procedures, Reports automation malfunctions timely to the supervisor as appropriate.
  • Records expiration dates in the automatic prescription dispensing system upon receipt.
  • Performs monthly inspections to assigned areas to ensure proper storage of medications and that expired drugs are removed. Completes inspection reports in compliance with regulatory requirements.

Work Schedule: Full-time | Monday to Friday | 8-hour tour, between hours of 7:30am and 5:00pm.

Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year).
Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.
Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.
Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA
Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement)

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS.

  • Citizenship. Be a citizen of the United States. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens.
  • English Language Proficiency. Pharmacy Technician candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English.
  • Certification. The employee must pass a national certification exam and hold an active national certification through either:
    1. Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT).
      -OR-
    2. National Healthcareer Association (NHA), Certified Pharmacy Technician (ExCPT).

GRADE REQUIREMENTS.
Experience.
Candidates must possess one (1) year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-07) level and demonstrate the KSAs below.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of concepts, principles, methodology and policies in a specialized area or section of pharmacy (such as sterile compounding, controlled substances, automation, clinical pharmacy, contact center, etc.)
  • Skill in training and orienting new and existing pharmacy facility employees and students on proper policies and procedures.
  • Ability to evaluate, analyze and coordinate workflow and work activities within a specialized area or section of the pharmacy.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
