Duties

Help
  • You will participate in the operation of a safety and occupational health program.
  • You will coordinate, conduct, and administer inspection, accident/complaint investigation, hazard evaluations, consultation assistance, and plan reviews as directed by the safety manager.
  • You will evaluate and conduct special studies of training techniques and lesson plans to ensure risk assessment and safety; responsibilities are defined and administered.
  • You will provide technical guidance during the operational planning process to ensure the integration of safety risk management.
  • You will assist in the development of safety policies, procedures and guidelines, and provides technical safety.
  • You will develop lesson plans and support materials; schedules, coordinates and conducts various safety briefings, safety training classes, and professional development classes for senior and junior leaders.

  • This position requires the incumbent meet all the training requirements established by the Department of the Navy for a GS-11/Journeyman Safety Specialist as outlined in the OPNAVIST 510023G and the NAVEDTRA 10076B.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver’s license.
  • This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.
  • This is a Mission Essential position. You will be required to ensure organization or facility continuity of operations and/or completion of tasks that are considered essential to the mission designated by a local or command decision.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.

Qualifications

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: conducting inspections, accidents and complaint investigations, hazard evaluations, consultation assistance, and planning reviews; assisting in the development of safety policies, procedures and guidelines, and provides technical safety and occupational health guidance.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

Education

In lieu of specialized experience, you may qualify with the following education or combination of both education and experience:

GS-11:

  • I have successfully completed a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene) or a degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study form among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology OR
  • I have successfully completed three full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene) or a degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study form among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology OR
  • I have successfully completed an LL.M. degree that is related to the position being filled OR
  • I have a combination of experience and graduate education as described above that equates to one year of experience. My percentage of the required education plus my percentage of the required experience equal one hundred percent.

A Cost-of-Living-Allowance (COLA) of 8.64% will be added to the stated salary. COLA is subject to change at any time.
