Duties

Help
  • You will serve as a crew member involved with a variety of prevention, detection, wildfire suppression, pre-suppression, and prescribed burning duties.
  • You will assist in directing activities in a complex fire environment both wildfire and prescribed fire, and helps to train other participants.
  • You will perform wildland fire line activities such as line construction, hose layout, operation of portable pumps and water handling accessories, breaking up of fuel concentrations by lopping, and scattering brush, wood, etc.
  • You will carry out specialized assignment such as backfire or burnout, mobile and stationary engine or other specialized equipment operation, construction of Helispots, specialized Helitack operations and hover hookups.
  • You will perform preventive maintenance tasks on equipment and other housekeeping duties associated with assigned facilities and ranges.
  • You will perform wildfire prevention activities such as patrolling to gage fire potential and occurrence, distributing literature, explaining wildfire prevention program to the public and base populace and preparing fire reports

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter.
  • In accordance with AR 690-11, this position has been designated as "Emergency-Essential". Emergency-Essential designation takes precedence over any transportation agreement or military recall status.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.
  • Incumbent is subject to annual medical examination and must pass the Work Capacity Test (WCT) for arduous positions.
  • Must possess a valid State license and/or government license to operate vehicles up to 25,000 GVW.
  • Incumbent is subject to recall 24 hours per day, seven days a week, in case of emergency, to suppress range or forest fires.
  • Must satisfactory complete training from the installation fire department on the operation of vehicles and equipment in support of fire fighting activities for this position. (AR-420-90)

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes experience in performing a variety of forestry-range prevention, detections, wildfire suppression, pre-suppression and prescribed burning duties. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

OR

Education: Four year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-04).
