Duties

Help

As a AIRCRAFT MECHANIC, WG-8852-10 your duties are below.

  1. Perform inspections, functional checks, and preventive maintenance on assigned aircraft to
    include pre-inspection, daily inspection, pre- and post-flight inspections and such special inspections
    as required, including fuel contamination checks, oil sampling, an inspection of onboard emergency
    equipment. Conducts checks on hydraulic, electrical, transmission, power systems, etc.
  2. Troubleshoots, diagnoses, and performs unscheduled maintenance on assigned and transient
    aircraft. Performs the full range of repair and testing of aircraft system, assemblies, and surfaces.
    Using a variety of methods involving test equipment, visual checks and instruments, diagnoses and
    identifies problem areas and determines the extent of repairs required. Removes components and
    assemblies, repairs or replaces defective parts and components and reassembles repaired items
    into the aircraft. Installs, aligns, and makes needed adjustments to major components and
    assemblies such as engines, propeller/rotors, transmissions, hydraulic systems, etc., assisting
    Specialists as required. Accomplishes adjustments to related systems which may be affected by
    repairs. Conducts ground functional tests of all aircraft systems. Services aircraft with oil, de-icing
    fluid, fuel, and hydraulic fluid. Launches and recovers assigned and transient aircraft; performs
    inspections prior to takeoff. Inspects for conditions such as oil, fuel, and hydraulic leak, cut lines,
    tires and loose panels.
  3. May be required to perform such additional duties as fire fighting, aircraft crash/rescue, snow
    removal, etc.

NATIONAL GUARD MEMBERSHIP IS REQUIRED: This is an excepted position that requires military membership in a compatible military assignment in the Iowa Army National Guard. Selectee will be required to wear the military uniform. Acceptance of this excepted position constitutes concurrence with these requirements as a condition of employment.

TRIAL PERIOD REQUIREMENT: As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a 2-year trial period or 1-year (Veterans Preference Eligibles Only) during which we will evaluate your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest. In determining if your employment advances the public interest, we may consider:

  • Your performance and conduct.
  • The needs and interests of the agency.
  • Whether your continued employment would advance organizational goals of the agency or the Government; and
  • Whether your continued employment would advance the efficiency of the Federal service.
Upon completion of your trial period your employment will be terminated unless you receive certification, in writing, that your continued employment advances the public interest.

SECURITY CLEARANCE REQUIREMENT: Employment is subject to attaining and maintaining a clearance as required by this position. If the selectee does not possess the applicable security clearance when hired, application must be made within 30 days of the start date. Failure to make application for the required security clearance will result in termination of employment.

Failure to complete prescribed courses may be cause for reassignment or termination of FTS.

Military Rank Requirements: Enlisted (E-6 and below)

Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Experience or training that has provided the candidate with the skill to remove and replace aircraft parts, accessories, and components, and to make adjustments and settings according to established specifications. Must be skilled in the use of hand tools and test equipment.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: WG-8852-10: Must have experience in the following:

  1. Experience or training installing, adjusting, aligning, troubleshooting, and functionally testing the various major and minor mechanical and pneudraulic systems on an aircraft during overhaul or modification.
  2. Experience coordinating the work of other mechanics, and scheduling maintenance to ensure completion of critical actions and optimum workflow.
  3. Must have the ability to instruct lower graded mechanics, military and other personnel in the disassembly and re-assembly of crash damaged engines, transmissions, gearboxes, hydraulic components, and fuel controls sufficient for the exhibit to be returned to its shipping container.
