This vacancy announcement will be open from May 11, 2026 to May 15, 2026 or when 25 applications have been received. The vacancy will close on whichever day the first of these conditions are met. The Field Support Branch (FSB) seeks a student volunteer to develop a custom GPT-powered query database system that transforms how our team accesses and analyzes logistics and operational data. This project focuses on creating intelligent AI agents (CustomGPTs) within the StateChat platform to automate database queries, generate inventory reports, and provide rapid access to critical information across multiple data sources. Working alongside the StateChat team, the student will design and implement AI-powered solutions that enhance logistics integration and operational efficiency.

Key Learning Objectives
Students will:
•    Design and deploy custom AI agents using prompt engineering and configuration best practices
•    Create a structured query database that integrates with existing FSB logistics systems
•    Develop user-friendly prompts, conversation guides, and query templates for common FSB operational needs (e.g., inventory by location, equipment status, supply chain metrics)
•    Integrate multiple data sources and tools into cohesive query systems
•    Implement proper citation systems, conversation retention policies, and security protocols
•    Document system architecture, agent configurations, capabilities, and usage guidelines
•    Test and refine AI agent performance based on user feedback and operational requirements
•    Ensure the system aligns with Department security protocols and data handling requirements
•    Present findings and deliver final working agents with complete documentation package

Student Responsibilities:
•    Build and configure CustomGPT agents following Department protocols and StateChat guidelines
•    Design query logic and retrieval strategies for FSB logistics databases
•    Develop templates and formatting standards for consistent, reliable outputs
•    Create comprehensive user documentation and training materials for FSB personnel
•    Conduct testing cycles to validate accuracy, reliability, and security compliance
•    Maintain engineering documentation throughout the term
•    Participate in weekly check-ins, midpoint review, and final project presentation
•    Deliver a functional prototype and complete documentation package

To participate in this Program, you must:

Must be a U.S. Citizen or U.S National studying in the U.S. Students studying abroad are ineligible for application.  All remote work must be completed domestic within the United States.

Be enrolled not less than half-time in an accredited trade school, technical or vocational institute, junior college, college, university, or other accredited educational institution.

Be in good academic standing as defined by your institution.

Commit to volunteering 8 – 20 hours per week for a minimum of 90 days.

Complete all required onboarding documentation assigned by the Federal agency and your academic institution.

Agree to volunteer. This position is unpaid. No compensation, stipends, or hiring preference will be granted from this work. You may use this volunteer experience to qualify for future jobs you choose to apply for.

Agree to understanding volunteers are not Federal employees.

Must have a minimum GPA of 2.0 out of 4.0 scale.

Qualifications

Applicants will be considered based on their knowledge, skills or abilities related to project needs.

Specifically, applicants should:

Familiarity with AI/GPT technologies and prompt engineering

Basic understanding of database design, query systems, and data structures     

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills    

Excellent written communication and technical writing abilities     

Interest in government operations, security logistics, and automation     

Familiarity with data analysis tools (Excel, SQL, Python, or R) is a plus but not required    

Education

To qualify, you must be enrolled not less than half-time in an accredited trade school, technical or vocational institute, junior college, college, university, or other accredited educational institution. You also must be in good academic standing as defined by your institution. Attach a copy of your transcripts to your application package for verification.

Prefer student be enrolled in a degree program related to Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Science, Supply Chain Management, Logistics, or related field.

Students must have a minimum GPA of 2.0 out of 4.0 scale. 

Students studying abroad are ineligible for application.  All remote work must be completed domestic within the United States.
