Duties

Help
  • You will serve as A Deck Department Head responsible for the effective and efficient management and supervision of deck department personnel.
  • You will serve as a ships' safety officer, training officer, damage control officer, security officer, oil spill coordinator and gas free engineer.
  • You will be accountable for all matters pertaining to management, operations, care, safety and physical condition of topside operations.
  • You will be responsible for ships fiscal management and adherence to ships budget.
  • You will supervise all subordinate deck personnel to include discipline, uniform standards/hygiene, assignment to watch and berthing, and personnel awards.

  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • This position is considered Key/Emergency-Essential. You will be required to provide immediate and continuing support to ensure the success of combat operations or the availability of combat-essential systems.
  • This is a Mission Essential position. You will be required to ensure organization or facility continuity of operations and/or completion of tasks that are considered essential to the mission designated by a local or command decision.

Qualifications

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISON:

  • Spearheading shipboard safety and proficiency of safe navigational practices including using lifesaving methods and techniques and firefighting equipment in Training Support operations to include Target launch/recovery, MIO/VBSS (Maritime Interdiction Operations/Vessel Board and Search and Seizure)
  • Organizing and distributing department work to ensure efficient and effective accomplishments and equitable distribution among subordinates -Maintaining all shipboard fiscal responsibilities.
  • Carrying out EEO policies, determines qualifications, assignments, training, discipline, berthing and awards for employees;
  • Supervising/overseeing/adhering to strict guidelines to the annual operating budget and maintaining all shipboard fiscal responsibilities.
SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR: This position has a Selective Placement Factor and is a requirement of this position:
You must hold a Merchant Marine Credential that includes a valid USCG STCS II/2 License for Chief Mate 500 GT or more and less than 3000 GT management level with the following endorsements OR proof of satisfactory completion of training: Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch (OICNW); Able Seafarer - Deck; Ratings Forming Part of a Navigational Watch (RFPNW); Proficiency in survival craft and rescue boat - other than fast rescue boats (PSC); Advanced Firefighting; STCW Basic Training; Radar Unlimited; ECDIS; ARPA, GMDSS (Optional); and Vessel Security Officer (VSO) with at least 1 year remaining on their license or if less than one year remaining, on your license. Note: A copy of your License, MMD, STCW and/or certifications and any extensions authorized, must be provided.)

Must be able to stand, walk and climb ladders for extended periods aboard ship during repair periods, loading and discharging of cargo, inclement weather and during other hazardous conditions and situations.
