Help

Major duties include:

  • Assign the immediate tasks to be performed by individual members of the group led.
  • Lead and assist in the restoration and construction of buildings and associated systems, including large repairs, equipment moves and installation, alterations, data and electrical cable installations/terminations and upgrades, covered by the following trades: Carpenters, Painters, Electricians, HVAC, Plumbers, Telecommunication and Maintenance Mechanics at the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System.
  • Ensure the quality of work that is produced by contractors and shop personnel with inspections, on-the-spot checks, work samples, daily safety inspections, infection control measures and customer interaction.
  • Supervise a crew of more than 21 Journeyman Level Trades, Telecommunications worker, Work Lead, and site workers in the trades of pipefitting, sheet metal, electronics, interior design, and industrial mechanics in the performance of a variety of work in the shops performing work in general construction, pipefitting, plumbing, carpentry, roofing, masonry, wood crafting, metal worker, painting, HVAC, electrical/electronics, plastering, equipment operations and telecommunications
  • Operate systems of extremely large capacity and flexibility, having a complex array of components, controls, gauges, and auxiliary equipment to coordinate and monitor a variety of specialized work activities that generate diverse air conditioning requirements.
  • Perform installing, renovating, modifying, and repairing new and existing electrical circuits, equipment and distribution systems used throughout the facility.
  • Perform installing, modifying, and repairing new and existing fire suppression systems such as sprinkler piping, number of heads and proper layout.
  • Install suspended ceilings, drywall, wall and doorway framing, flooring material installation, door prepping and hanging, installing & adjusting manual and auto door closures, door hardware, load bearing ceilings made of metal beams and surfacing material, performs maintenance and repair on large concrete saws, concrete drills, table saws, drill presses, vacuums and varies trade related equipment.
  • Construct, alter, repair, and modify items made of metal, wood, and wood substitutes.
  • Travel to any of six rural satellite clinics encompassing a 400 square mile area of Southern Arizona as work lead to support, monitor, and work beside a team in the modification, restoration or medical equipment installation needs necessary to support facility and equipment operations.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 05/12/2026.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

The incumbent must have a current, valid driver's license and EPA Universal Certification (Obtained within 120 days).

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:
The physical demands on the job are strenuous in respect that it is necessary to climb vertical ladders, work off pneumatic lifts, inside cramped spaces. The incumbent may be required to stand, bend, stoop, kneel, climb, crawl, and work in awkward positions for prolonged periods. The incumbent handles carry equipment, materials and tools weighing up to fifty (50) pounds. Incumbent will be required to stoop, crawl, and climb over duct work and piping while working on equipment. Occasionally lifts and carry objects over ninety (90) pounds, with the assistance of others or lifting devices. The work can sometimes require strenuous physical exertion, climbing ladders and scaffolds, and in general have use of his/her limbs. He/she must visit all those areas where subordinates will be working for the purpose of instruction an and machinery. d/or inspection. The incumbent may routinely work around and be required to operate mobile heavy equipment.

Incumbent works indoors/outdoors, uncontrolled environments, in inclement weather conditions and in confined or uncomfortable spaces. Many work sites are hot, dirty, dusty, greasy, poorly lit, cramped and with unpleasant odors. Occasionally subject to possible dangerous working conditions including exposure to hazards normally encountered, in the hospital trades and various types of infections. Work involves frequent walking, standing and occasional desk work. Position requires stooping, bending, working on ladders, or working in cramped conditions under extremely hot temperatures associated with steam generation, and/or awkward positions. Incumbent must be able to work in continuously noisy environment. He/she is subject to hazardous conditions which may include the risk of electrical shock, burns, cuts, bruises, broken bones, and respiratory ailments. He/she must be aware of this and be able to cope with same. There is an exposure risk to various chemical hazards when handling and mixing chemicals. Safety procedures to include confined space entry and Lockout Tagout (LOTO) procedures must be followed, and appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) safe gear must be worn, as required for the specific work area or task. Work may be performed from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms. Works both indoors and outdoors. Frequently exposed to drafts, changing temperatures, dust, grease, heat, fumes, and noise. Work in bad weather, in mud or snow and in wet or icy areas. Subject to cuts, bums, chemical irritations, or bruises.
