Duties

Help

Assigns work and supervises other Carpenters, workers and helpers. Responsible for distributing and assigning work primarily on a day-to-day or project-to-project basis.  Responsible for the quality and quantity of work performed by the subordinate work force.  Motivates employees and encourages training, advancement and continued education. Prepares work performance appraisals, approves time and approves or disapproves leave, counsels employees and recommends disciplinary action when necessary.

Using accepted trade methods, and techniques, supervises journeyman work involving a variety of trades such as building cabinets, counter fixtures, check-out stands, check cashing booths, Christmas decorations, finishing paneling, doors, jambs and facings and trim. Constructs, alters, repairs, or modifies items and structures as assigned.  Plans and completes work assignments from initial layout to final assembly. Read and interprets and applies building plans, blueprints, specifications, sketches, and building codes.  Computes measurements and makes adjustments to incomplete blueprints, sketches, and work orders to ensure accuracy of fit and finish. Responsible for maintaining a safe work environment. Responsible for instructing and inspecting the work of lesser skilled workers.

Develops and ensures implementation of an activity safety program in accordance with the Base Safety Program.  Conducts safety meetings at least quarterly.  Advises employees of available safety regulations, instructions, materials and equipment.  Promptly reports workplace accidents to the Human Resources Office.  Ensures safety training is provided to employees.  Complies with OSHA standards and takes action to correct unsafe or unhealthy working conditions.  Ensures employees understand safety infractions that can result in disciplinary actions, and follows through with appropriate action.  Ensures minimal loss of duty by complying with ¿Return To Work¿ program initiatives, and following up on employee wellbeing.

Adheres to established standards of actively supporting the principles of the EEO program and prevention of sexual harassment.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

EVALUATIONS:

Qualifications

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:  Must possess leadership ability and  have the ability to clearly communicate general and specific instructions. Must have the ability to use hand and power tools. Must possess knowledge of advance shop mathematics and have the ability to recognize quality work, to read, interpret and apply building plans, specifications, diagrams, blueprints, sketches, and building codes. Must be able to plan and complete Journeyman level work.  

Must have some knowledge of the Uniform Building Code. Must have the ability to apply supervisory methods and techniques.  Must have the ability to plan, organize and be able to learn command policies and directives as related to the operation.

California driver¿s license is required.  

RESPONSIBILITY:   Direct and supervise establish daily work assignments and provide general instructions either orally or in writing.  Incumbent is responsible for analyzing and correcting problems independently. Work is subject to spot checks by the supervisor for conformance with standards, timeliness, and adherence to established operating procedures.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work involves prolonged standing, bending, stooping, physical exertion, kneeling and other uncomfortable and tiring positions.  Frequently required to work on parts of equipment that are located in hard to reach places.  Regularly lifts, moves, and carries light to heavy weight objects. You must be able to handles a variety of tools, materials and equipment. Climbs ladders and may perform work from scaffolds or high places. Work involves frequent lifting or moving of objects weighing up to 30 lbs. and occasional lifting of over 50 lbs. Constant standing and walking.

WORK CONDITION:   Work is performed outdoors or inside. Work is subject to cuts from hand or power tools, and exposure to the presence of sawdust, splinters and flying chips.  Subject to inclement weather conditions while working outdoors.  There is a danger of falling from ladders or high places.  May be exposed to strong smelling odors, vapors, fumes or chemicals. May be exposed to the possibility of broken bones, burns, cuts and bruises. May be required to use protective clothing or gear such as masks, smocks, coats, goggles, gloves or shields.

May be required to travel.
