Duties

Help
  • Serve as the initial incident commander in hazardous materials incidents when incumbent is the first arriving officer.
  • Responsible for establishing an initial incident command location and directing all communications from the incident scene.
  • Plan work to be accomplished by subordinates, sets immediate priorities, prepares schedules for completion of work, and evaluates performance of subordinates to ensure timely completion of tasks.
  • Perform pre-incident planning activities and conduct company-level fire inspections and risk mitigation.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examination in accordance with DoDM 6055.06 to ensure continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 45 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • This position is covered by the Civilian Drug Abuse Testing Program.
  • This position requires the incumbent to wear the prescribed uniform and/or personal protective equipment while on duty.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis; 72-hour rotating shifts with a work schedule of 144 hours per pay period.
  • Due to the nature of this position, employees are required to work both planned and unscheduled overtime.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • Employee may be required to lift/carry personnel in emergency situations.
  • Duties require full use of both arms, both legs, and fingers to bend, turn, pull, crawl, kneel, and climb for such tasks as use of aerial ladders,
  • firefighting equipment controls, arranging/connecting hoses, rappelling, operation of fire truck and all types of rescue operations, etc.
  • Incumbent is responsible for assisting in emergency action involving hazardous waste.
  • Assigned work may include collecting, storing, moving, labeling (including dating), segregating, preparing turn-in documents on, and maintaining records on hazardous wastes.
  • Incumbent will successfully complete certification and on-the-job training covering hazardous waste technician work.
  • Position includes a continuing requirement to satisfy job-oriented training. This position is covered as a rigorous/primary position.
  • During rescue operations, incumbent may come into contact with human blood or other potential infectious materials which may result in possible exposure to blood borne pathogens.
  • This position requires irregular tours of duty to include: on call, rotating shifts, weekends and holidays.
  • Employee must remain clean-shaven to insure integrity of mask fit for breathing apparatus.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a current, valid state motor vehicle operator license to operate vehicles up to one ton.
  • This position is subject to a one year probation to assess your ability to perform Supervisory duties is required unless previously completed.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. To qualify based on your experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Experience controlling or extinguishing fires; 2) Experience detecting, reducing, or eliminating potential fire hazards; 3) Experience assessing patient's conditions to administer basic treatment; and 4) Experience assisting in training programs for fire department personnel. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

Selective Placement Factor: In addition to the specialized experience required to qualify for the GS-08 level you must also possess and maintain ALL the following Department of Defense (or reciprocal equivalent) certification, certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) in accordance with DoD 6055.06-M.
