Help

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Operate a 10 to 15 passenger van with a gross vehicle weight over 10,000 pounds to transport veterans on a regular and recurring basis to the VA Medical Center and other locations in the surrounding areas. The van is equipped with specialized equipment and the Motor Vehicle Operator is responsible for knowledge of their operating procedure to include: a two-way mobile unit and a rear-mounted electronic wheelchair lift.
  • For maximum safety of patients, Motor Vehicle Operator must ensure that wheelchairs are locked in place, secured and positioned properly. Incumbent will assist veterans in and out of the vehicle, observing necessary safety and lifting techniques as appropriate. Incumbent ensures the safety and comfort of the veterans during the time the veteran is in route to destination. Incumbent drives a passenger shuttle van over predetermined routes and arrive at and depart from pick up and discharge points at scheduled times. The driver has the ability to deal effectively with people in a hospitable manner.
  • Incumbent is responsible for taking vehicle for routine maintenance and/or repairs as necessary.
  • Maintains a daily logbook indicating the mileage, time and date of arrivals and departure between the VA Medical Center and dispatched points (CBOC's).
  • Primary duties will be in compliance with VHA Directive 2008-020 - Patient Transportation Program and other VA regulatory agencies.
Work Schedule: 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, Monday - Friday

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Daily duties include climbing in and out of vehicles, moderate to heavy physical effort when loading and unloading patients, and driving long hours. Incumbent must be physically sound and have good coordination of eyes, hands, and feet, and vision and depth perception. Must be mentally alert to traffic hazards and dangers of the highway. Considerable physical effort may be required to change tires and make limited emergency repairs, such as installing an emergency fan belt or replacing an electrical fuse on open highways.

Working Conditions: Operates vehicle in all types of traffic and weather on public roads (or equivalent), and is exposed to the danger of serious accidents. Driving in heavy traffic and at highway speeds over complicated road and interchange systems. May be exposed to dirt and fumes, and to the possibility of cuts, cruises, and broken bones as a results of accidents while driving. May also be exposed to patients with all types of diseases, viruses, etc.
