Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional

Incumbent will be assigned to the lnterventional Radiology Hybrid Operating Room 50% of the time and Diagnostic Radiology Services 50% of the time.

Duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • The incumbent performs the technical functions related to multi-modality imaging procedures such as Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA), Computed Clinical Information Technology, and integrating this information with computerized digital
    imaging technology.
  • Assists and instructs on complex procedures such as Angiography, Abdominal Aorta, Aortic Arch, Cerebral Angiography, Pulmonary and all other Angiograms, Venograms, Percutaneous Nephrostomies, Transhepatic Cholangiograms, Trans jugular intrahepatic port systemic shunts (TIPS), Atherectomies, Thrombectomies, R.F. Ablations, Inferior vena cava and arterial prosthetic stent, hemodialysis catheter placement, cyst and/or abscess drainage, biopsies, chemotherapy palliative catheter placement, treatments, pull sheath, and other interventional procedures.
  • Operates digital, computerized radiography as well as conventional fixed and mobile radiology equipment and PACS, in support of the general radiology section.
  • Performs all routine and problem prone procedures such as, but not limited to, IVPs, GI series, single and double contrast barium enemas, arthrograms, routine radiological examinations, and portables.
  • Administers contrast media under the supervision of a staff Radiologist.
  • Assists the staff Radiologist, as required, to monitor patient's vitals.
  • Assist lnterventional Radiologists as a scrub tech, which includes assisting the operating room team and vascular surgeons with complex endovascular and open procedures.
  • Assess patients for procedure contraindications. Look into the patient's chart to gather relevant information pertaining to the case.
  • Assist with basic life support, if necessary.
  • Responsible for patient transport, preparation of room, procedure table setup, standard equipment setup, patient positioning for a wide variety of interventional and radiographic procedures. Operation of all ancillary equipment, such as ultrasound machines, Angio jet, embolectomy devises, RFA and injectors for procedures, C-Arms, hybrid operating room and portable x-ray units.
  • Operates the computer when performing DSA studies, which require frequent moves between databases and/or alters existing databases, then transfers select images to the iSite System and verifies the arrival of the complete and accurate images.
  • Incumbent provides procedure training to new employees.
  • Provides training for staff physicians and residents on the imaging technology process.
  • Performs I-STAT (Blood Analyzer Unit).
  • Assists in maintaining adequate stock of sterile catheters, wires, and supplies in the procedure suite and submits inventory shortages to the Supply Chain Services for restocking.
  • Performs daily cleaning of equipment as indicated by infection control standards and follows established Standard of Procedures guidelines for reusable medical equipment.
  • Recognizes malfunctions and troubleshoot equipment to find possible causes for malfunction.
  • Schedule exams in a manner to optimize patient flow while maintaining flexibility for emergency cases.
  • Practices radiation safety to reduce exposure to patient, staff, and self. Use of lead aprons, lead gloves, lead shields, and film badges in compliance with radiation safety regulations. Able to alter techniques, as necessary, to adhere to ALARA principles.
  • Follows Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals.

When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).

Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year)
Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.
Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet qualifications at time of application.

Basic Requirements:

United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

English Language Proficiency. DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d)

Certification-Documentation Submitted. All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R).

Education-Transcripts Submitted. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the 2 equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE)
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

Grandfathering Provision. All persons employed in VHA as a DRT on the effective date of this qualification standard are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the title, series and grade held, including positive education and certification that are part of the basic requirements of the DRT occupation. For employees who do not meet all of the basic requirements in this standard, but who met the qualifications applicable to the position at the time they were appointed to it, the following provisions apply:

  1. DRTs that require a certification, may be reassigned, promoted up to and including the full performance (journeyman) level, or changed to lower grade within the occupation, but may not be promoted beyond the journey level or placed in supervisory or managerial positions.
  2. DRTs that require a certification only at higher grade levels must meet the certification requirement before they can be promoted to those higher grade levels.
  3. DRTs who are appointed on a temporary basis prior to the effective date of the qualification standard may not have their temporary appointment extended or be reappointed, on a temporary or permanent basis, until they fully meet the basic requirements of the standard. 3
  4. DRTs initially grandfathered into this occupation, who subsequently obtain additional education and/or certification that meet all of the basic requirements of this qualification standard must maintain the required credentials as a condition of employment in the occupation.
  5. Employees who are retained as a DRT under this provision and subsequently leave the occupation lose protected status and must meet the full VA qualification standard requirements in effect at the time of reentry as a DRT.
    • NOTE: Each uncertified VHA DRT who was permanently employed on June 21, 1986, and whose competence in the safe administration of ionizing radiation was affirmed, in writing, by a VA licensed physician not later than January 1, 1987, is considered fully qualified. These employees may be promoted, changed to lower grade, or reassigned within the GS-0647 occupational series. Any employee initially retained in this manner who leaves this job series loses protected status and must meet the full requirements in effect at the time of reentry.

Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements for appointment, the following criteria must be used when determining the appropriate grade assignment of candidates: GS-9 Experience. At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level.

AND

Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist. Employees at this level are fully functional as an advanced DRT and carry out their assigned tasks independently. DRTs at this level may have varying assignments including special and complex imaging procedures beyond the full performance level, clinical instruction, and basic QM type duties within the program. Regardless of the nature of the specific assignment, the work must be of sufficient scope and complexity to meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform at this level. The candidate must demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):
  • *Ability to balance the needs of patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures.
  • Knowledge of techniques for gathering relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers.
  • *Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure.
  • Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography.
  • Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous methods and techniques and universal precautions.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
