The Ralph H. Johnson VA healthcare System is recruiting for a Pharmacy Supervisor in Brunswick, Georgia.
The Supervisor will be responsible for the professional and administrative management of clinical pharmacy services within the Ambulatory Care section. This will include personnel, clinical pharmacy programs (including pharmacy student and resident training), prescription processing, coordination with the Consolidated Mail Outpatient Pharmacy, scheduling, compliance with policies/procedures, and budgetary execution related to these areas. Such individuals have responsibilities for supervising multiple pharmacists. Manages people, maintains effective interdepartmental relations, and cooperates with other services to accomplish the medical facility's mission and goals. Develops performance standards, assures that the program area is compliant with all regulatory and accrediting body requirements, designs and implements orientation and training programs for staff, and develops and maintains systems to monitor the performance of staff activities. Develops policies and procedures relative to their assigned area.

Supervisory Functions:
Responsible for the day-to day operations of the clinical pharmacy services within the Ambulatory Care Section. Serve as Acting Associate Chief, Ambulatory Care Clinical Services or other pharmacy supervisors when requested. Plan, organize, assign, and review work of subordinates; this includes scheduling of priorities and personnel for the effective completion of pharmacy programs objectives.
Conduct on-going and annual performance evaluation of subordinates. Counsel employees on performance when necessary and/or recognize high level performance as appropriate.
Provide advice, counsel, or instructions to subordinate employees on both work and administrative matters. This includes hearing and resolving complaints or grievances from employees and referring the more serious complaints not resolved to the appropriate channels.
Maintain physical layout of equipment and fixtures in ambulatory care pharmacy in a manner that allows efficient and effective flow of work. The incumbent will ensure that equipment is properly utilized and is maintained in good operating condition.
Continuously strives to find ways to reduce cost of operations and to increase efficiency of operations.
Monitor and maintains appropriate data and prepares reports and correspondence in a complete, accurate, and timely manner.
Initiate and demonstrates actions to support Equal Employment Opportunity.
Ensure compliance with all Joint Commission, VACO, union contract, EEO regulations, and local standards and guidelines as well as federal and state laws as staffing and resources permit.
Ensures that monthly ward and clinical inspections are conducted in assigned areas of pharmacy.
Develop, monitor, and maintain effective customer service-oriented pharmacy programs consistent with the Pharmaceutical Care philosophy.
Verification of physician's orders to ensure appropriate dose, route and frequency. Contacts physician to clarify any changes for allergies, drug interactions and nonformulary agents.
Other duties as assigned.

Clinical Functions:
Medication Management: including the ability to initiate, change, or discontinue OTC or prescription medication for the patients involved in pharmacist-run clinics per the pharmacist's specific scope of practice or for medications ordered outside of these specified areas, following discussion with the appropriate provider without co-signature, (except for controlled substances).
Recognizing, reporting, and managing medication-related complications, adverse drug reactions, and errors.
Reviewing clinic patient action profiles for appropriate drug therapy, adherence issues, drug interactions and adverse drug reactions.
Obtaining patient medication histories and counseling patients and/or relatives on medications as requested by providers or for patients enrolled in pharmacist-run clinics.
Recommending appropriate drug therapy as indicated by P&T Committee approved pharmaceutical care plans. Converting patient specific therapeutic substitutions as approved by P&T Committee.
Recommending medication dosage adjustments in patients with special considerations such as drug interactions, renal or hepatic insufficiency.
Providing clinically appropriate drug information to patients, patient's family members, and medical center staff as appropriate.
Ordering laboratory tests as necessary to evaluate and monitor medication therapy.
Demonstrating the knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possession of the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the unit's/area's/department's policies and procedures.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Graduate of an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) accredited College or School of Pharmacy with a baccalaureate degree in pharmacy (BS Pharmacy) and/or a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree.
  • Full, current and unrestricted license to practice pharmacy in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia. The pharmacist must maintain current registration if this is a requirement for maintaining full, current, and unrestricted licensure. A pharmacist who has, or has ever had, any license(s) revoked, suspended, denied, restricted, limited, or issued/placed in a probationary status may be appointed only in accordance with the provisions in VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3, section B, paragraph 16.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

Grade Determinations: One year experience equivalent to the GS-12 (Full Performance Level)

Develops policies and procedures relative to their assigned area. Pharmacists assigned to this position must demonstrate the following KSAs:

a. Ability to effectively supervise subordinate staff.
b. Ability to communicate orally and in writing to persuade and influence clinical and management decisions.
c. Expert understanding of regulatory and quality standards pertaining to pharmacy.
d. Skill in managing people or programs.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-0660-12. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-0660-13.
