Duties

Help
  • Serve as the primary coordinator for patient care activities, including handling sensitive inquiries from diverse stakeholders such as referring physicians and congressional offices.
  • Screen patient referrals, assess initial eligibility for clinical trials, and follow up with external contacts to ensure timely responses.
  • Attend staff meetings and branch rounds to identify and resolve patient care coordination issues and contribute to process improvements.
  • Schedule protocol-specific clinical tests, organize prescreening documentation, and coordinate with multiple roles (e.g., data managers, social workers) throughout a patient's participation in a research protocol.
  • Enter patient data into research systems with accuracy and sensitivity, ensuring protocol eligibility criteria are met and communicated.
  • Facilitate patient lodging through coordination with the Children's Inn, and ensure families understand relevant guidelines and expectations.
  • If you are selected at the GS-6 level, you will essentially perform the same duties as those at the full performance level described above; however, duties are less complex and will be performed under closer supervision with more detailed guidance.

Qualifications

You qualify at the GS-06 level if you meet the following qualification requirement:

You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS-5 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: scheduling and updating patient appointments in an electronic system; maintaining patient records, including scanning and submitting external medical documents; responding to patient phone calls or emails and coordinating with staff; organizing routine medical documents such as scanned forms, lab results, or outside records.

You qualify at the GS-07 level if you meet the following qualification requirement:

You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS-6 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: scheduling protocol-specific tests for patients in research settings; preparing and processing travel, admission, and lodging documentation; responding to inquiries from patients, referring physicians, or institutions; maintaining and updating patient records, including scanned forms, prescreening information, and external reports.

You will receive credit for all experience material to the position, including experience gained in religious, civic, welfare, service, and organizational activities, regardless of whether you received pay.

  • This position is designated as an "emergency essential" position and the selected candidate will be considered an "emergency essential" employee and will be required to be available, ready, willing, and able to report for duty under all circumstances (e.g., inclement weather, government closings and holidays, lapses in appropriations, non-emergency and emergency situations) for operation 24 hours a day and 365 days per year coverage.

How You Will Be Evaluated

The Clinical Center is a clinical research hospital providing medical services for patients participating in human research protocols of the NIH. The Clinical Center provides patient care facilities and services for clinical investigations by the NIH Institutes, research in related areas, and other training programs. The Patient Support Services Department (PSSD) is housed within the Clinical Center (CC) and is currently seeking Medical Support Assistants to add to their team.
