Duties

Help
  • Pathways Internship positions provide for development and training. Assignments become more responsible as incumbent increases knowledge and skills through work experience and academic training. At the full-performance level, you will be expected to:
  • Sales Store Checkers work in a military grocery store. The work is like a cashier or clerk at your local grocery or retail store.
  • As a student trainee, you perform the basic, simple, and repetitive checkout functions under close supervision to gain competence and proficiency.
  • Operating a cash register scanning system to list and total the prices of individual items purchased.
  • Collecting payment and making correct change when required.
  • Changing register tape and clearing routine equipment and scanning jams on registers.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national. Applicants with a Permanent Resident Card are authorized to live and work in the U.S. but are not eligible for employment in positions requiring U.S. citizenship. If selected, proof of citizenship is required.
  • Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
  • Must be at least 16 years of age. Per Department of Labor regulations, underage youths may not perform hazardous jobs.
  • Selectee must sign Pathways Participant Agreement.
  • Must have salary paid through electronic fund transfer (direct deposit).
  • The incumbent of this position is required to be a current student in good standing and maintain a cumulative and term grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or equivalent for the duration of the Pathways Program.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 25 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • This position requires the incumbent to work on an intermittent or unscheduled, on-call basis.
  • May be subject to shift work and irregular tours of duty including nights, weekends, and/or holidays.
  • Temporary DeCA Pathways Intern cannot convert to a permanent position noncompetitively.
  • This position requires good hand and eye coordination, alertness, integrity, tact and courtesy.
  • This position is required to stand and work for long periods of time.
  • Work is performed in an environment subject to temperature changes, including blasts of cool air from automatic doors.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: Students who are eligible for participation in the Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) Internship Program
Positions are open to current students pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate in an accredited high school, college (including 4-year colleges/universities, community colleges, and junior colleges); professional, technical, vocational, and trade school; advanced degree programs; or other qualifying educational institution on at least a half-time basis (as defined by the institution in which the student is enrolled). Short-term training programs (e.g., several two-week programs completed) are not considered an academic course of study.

Internship for current students in good standing at an accredited education.

For this internship, you must be able to work an intermittent Work Schedule. Position is Temporary not to exceed 30 September 2026.

This intern position is designed to prepare a student trainee for employment after graduation. Interns will be assigned tasks designed to increase familiarity with the target occupation in a real world work environment.

In order to qualify you must first meet the Internship Program eligibility:

1. Student Status: Current students in an accredited high school, college (including 4-year colleges/universities, community colleges, and junior colleges); professional, vocational, and trade school; advanced degree programs; or other qualifying educational institution pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate, including certain home-school curricula. Individuals must be taking at least a half-time academic course load. "Half-time" is defined by the school in which the student is enrolled.

2. Grade Point Average: You must maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher each semester.

Secondly, you must meet the education requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Pathways Internship Positions:

To be eligible as a GS-2099-01 you must be enrolled in a high school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) program.

  • A high school diploma program, GED program, or home school whose curriculum is approved by a State or local governing body, (https://www2.ed.gov/about/contacts/state/index.html), or
  • Private school that provides secondary education as determined under state law, or
  • One of the following accredited by the Department of Education: (https://www.ope.ed.gov/dapip/#/home), or
  • Recognized program in a technical or vocational school, or
  • Two-year or four-year college or university, or
  • Graduate or professional school (e.g., law school or medical school).

*Must be enrolled (or accepted for enrollment) in an accredited school on at least a half-time basis.

*Proof of enrollment reflecting your Spring 2026 status (includes transcripts, class schedule, or acceptance letter). Proof of future enrollment required upon entrance on duty.

NOTE: If your college, vocational, trade, technical or high schools' definition of "academic year" differs from above, you must submit proof of this difference (e.g., copy of course catalog that defines an academic year). Absent this documentation, you will screened for academic qualifications based on the academic hours as defined in the bullets above.

This position has an education requirement. You MUST submit dated documentation showing current enrollment in a qualifying institution (e.g. letter from the registrar, unofficial transcripts from current semester) by the closing date of the announcement. Education must be accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Students who are homeschooled must have completed 70% of their high school studies at the time of application as demonstrated on school transcript.
