Duties

Help
  • Perform bridge maintenance and repair tasks to four high-level highway bridges and one bascule type highway bridge.
  • Clean sand and salt concentrations from bridges using high pressure hoses and detergent solutions.
  • Clean and maintain tools, materials and equipment.
  • Perform operator maintenance on all vehicles (e.g. monitoring fluid levels, replacing air filter, checking tire pressure hose connections).
  • Operate snooper crane for lower-level repairmen.
  • Rig spider staging, scaffolding, and boatswain chairs to reach areas inaccessible by walkway.
  • Perform welding duties that require cutting, fabricating, and working in awkward physical positions.
  • Clean and repair drainage structures: replace pipes and hangers; open drain lines and drains; repair and replace troughs.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment and annual physical examination to ensure required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 40 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess and maintain a valid state Commercial Class B with (N)Tank endorsement Driver's License.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random drug testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • May be subject to a one year probationary period if not already completed.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): The ability to perform the work of a Bridge Repairer independently without more than normal supervision to include tasks such as: Conducting repair and maintenance work; operating and driving multiple vehicles; and/or perform different welding processes. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

To meet the basic eligibility, you must receive at least two points on the screen-out element indicated above and must have an average of two points on all the job elements listed below. Your application will be further evaluated to determine if you meet the best qualified cut-off referral to the selecting official.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Works in cramped and hard to reach places from spider staging, snooper crane, ladders, etc. This requires standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in uncomfortable positions. Frequently required to lift, carry, and set up materials and equipment weighing 40 pounds and over.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Normally works outside subject to the elements and often at considerable heights. There is a constant danger of serious cuts and bruises and falling and drowning. Wears protective clothing including breathing apparatus when sand blasting. Work is extremely dirty. In addition, subject to fumes and breathing sand when blasting. Solvents used in painting cause skin and eye irritations. Welding involves exposure to fumes, heat, flying sparks, the glare of torches and heated materials. Danger to self due to working at heights of 100 feet or higher is compensated premium pay and has not been considered in establishing the grade level for this job (CPR P. 40.8-6a).
