Duties

Help
  • You will prepare surfaces and apply protective and decorative coatings to the interiors, exteriors, furnishings, fitments, instruments, and consoles of Nuclear submarines, production plant equipment, buildings, barges, and surface craft.
  • You will prepare ferrous and non-ferrous surfaces by removing oxides, scale, rust deteriorated films, oils, grease, growths, and other contaminants.
  • You will utilize hand wire brushes, hand scrapers, steel wool, scotch-brite pads, and various hand cleaning brushes.
  • You will assemble and set up portable blasting equipment.
  • You will mix, match, tint and blend coating materials adding various agents.
  • You will inspect completed work for paint coverage and adherence to specified mil thickness prior to quality assurance inspection.

  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.
  • This position requires rotating shift work.

The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision:

- Ability interpreting and complying with blueprints, paint schedules, sketches, manufacturer's directions and specifications.
- Ability to lay-out work areas to be painted.
- Ability preparing surfaces for coating and applying filling agents, epoxies to specified tolerances, smoothness, and shape.
- Ability to mix and apply various types of epoxy paints, take wet-film thickness readings.
- Ability to mix, match, tint, and blend coating materials and adding various agents such as retardants, dryers, solvents, thinners, fish eye eliminators, and activators.
- Ability utilizing equipment and material such as tumble blast, rotoblast, airless blast, and centrifugal wheel blast.
