The primary purpose of this position is to: serve as a HQ AFFSA weapon systems/subsystems senior maintenance Subject Matter Expert. Provides expert Air Force-level technical advice to DoD, USAF, Air Staff and HQ AFFSA and represent HQ AFFSA and the Air Staff on all navigational aids (NAVAID) matters.

Duties

Help

  • Serves as HQ AFFSA weapon systems/subsystems maintenance/Subject Matter Expert.
  • Provides Air Traffic Control and Landing Systems (ATCALS) Subject Matter Expert (SME) oversight and
    technical guidance concerning system siting, training, and assistance to technicians. Conducts on-the-job
    (OJT) training to apprentices in all phases of work and performs Quality Assurance (QA) inspections.
  • Serves as a Team Chief and lead technical advisor on behalf of HQ AFFSA for systems and subsystems.
  • Represents HQ USAF and HQ AFFSA with a variety of installation and functional area organizations.
  • Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a
    safe and clean work environment.

BASIC REQUIREMENT OR INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT:

Specialized Experience (for positions above GS-5): Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: Working as a skilled mechanic or maintenance worker, sales or service engineer, or planner or estimator in a technical group dealing with manufacture, utilization, repair, or operation of equipment; reviewing and applying technical specifications and requirements; analyzing equipment and forecasting spare parts requirements; reading and interpreting engineering change orders, equipment requisitions, shop orders, and work orders; analyzing contract specifications and examining pertinent equipment to determine if specifications are met; analyzing or supervising maintenance, repair, or production operations to determine methods of improvement.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one year (52 weeks) of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-12, or equivalent in other pay systems. Specialized experience is defined as providing/analyzing accurate, relevant, and timely flight information, regulations, instructions and support services to DoD, national, and coalition aviators; Providing guidance for the creation and application of criteria, procedures, and precision equipment for worldwide flight operations, air traffic control and airfield management; Providing guidance to staff members regarding maintenance methods/procedures; and providing advice to higher officials to improve production operations.

RECRUITMENT KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSA):

1. Expert knowledge and experience working with a wide variety of complex and integrated Navigational Aids and
Air Traffic Control and Landing Systems, airfield systems, weapon systems and associated support equipment.

2. Expert knowledge of a wide range of electronic principles and practices, operating parameters, capabilities, and limitations of electronic systems associated with air traffic control equipment. Must be familiar with system/component design, capabilities, configurations, limitations, and functional operation to include various types of electronics logic.

3. Expert knowledge in siting systems using engineering concepts, theories, modeling software, and geodetic survey data to meet airfield design criteria.

4. Expertise in the interpretation of technical data, analyzing problems in integrated/interfacing systems and deducing the proper sequence of steps in troubleshooting system(s) circuits.

5. Skill in effectively interacting, operating, and communicating (both verbally and in writing) with personnel from diverse backgrounds/qualifications/experiences when providing technical advice to senior leadership or junior engineers and technicians.

6. Ability to rank priorities and make accurate and quick decisions that support the unit mission and the safety of flight regarding equipment operation.

7. Ability to modify standard procedures, adapt equipment or techniques and make departures from previous approaches to solve technical problems or improve system performance.

8. Ability to train others in a timely, certifiable and comprehensive manner, while adhering to all applicable guidance.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
