As the Associate Director, Office of Fusion Energy Sciences, you will:
Serve as an international expert in the areas of research and the scientific user facilities supported by the Office's program.
Formulate, direct, implement, administer, evaluate, and defend programs and policies necessary for the efficient implementation of a complex, comprehensive program in fusion energy sciences research.
Develop the budget requirements for activities at national laboratories, universities, and other research institutions.
Integrate the efforts of the program elements, particularly the elements that support research with those that support the design, construction, and operations of instrumentation and the scientific user facilities.
Develop and maintain working relationships with the DOE Site Office Managers, the Oak Ridge Office and Chicago Office Managers, and other Field Managers responsible for national laboratories performing program-sponsored research in order to ensure integration of the Office's science programs with laboratory operations.
Maintain regular contact with the head of the organization and other senior level managers; maintains frequent contact with assistant secretaries, office directors and their representatives, counterparts in other Federal agencies, Congressional leaders, DOE field offices, contractors, university, and other research groups including foreign institutions.

TECHNICAL QUALIFICATIONS (TQs): Your resume should demonstrate accomplishments that would satisfy the technical qualifications.
TQ 1: Demonstrated capabilities in scientific and technical leadership and in the management of innovative research programs, scientific facilities, and national and international collaborations in the area of fusion energy sciences.
TQ 2: Demonstrated capabilities in formulating, developing, and executing overall policies, program emphasis, strategic planning with the application of extensive scientific knowledge, breadth of insight, and technical expertise in fusion energy sciences.
EXECUTIVE CORE QUALIFICATIONS (ECQs): In addition to the Technical Qualification Requirements listed above, all new entrants into the Senior Executive Service (SES) under a career appointment will be assessed for executive competency against the following five mandatory ECQs. If your 2-page resume does not reflect demonstrated evidence of the ECQs and TQs, you may not receive further consideration for the position. There are five ECQs:

This includes, when necessary, the ability to lead people through change and to hold individuals accountable.
ECQ 5: Achieving Results - This core qualification involves the demonstrated ability to achieve both individual and organizational results, and to align results to stated goals from superiors.
Note: If you are a member of the SES or have been certified through successful participation in an OPM approved SES Candidate Development Program (SESCDP), or have SES reinstatement eligibility, you do not need to respond to the ECQs. Instead, you should attach proof (e.g., SF-50, Certification by OPM's SES Qualifications Review Board (QRB)) of your eligibility for noncompetitive appointment to the SES.
Education
BASIC REQUIREMENT FOR PHYSICAL SCIENCE 1301 SERIES:
Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
or
Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
BASIC REQUIREMENT FOR PHYSICS 1310 SERIES:
Degree: physics; or related degree that included at least 24 semester hours in physics.
or
Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in physics totaling at least 24 semester hours, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
