Duties

Help
  • Repair and maintain facility heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems.
  • Repair electrical problems from disconnect on unit throughout unit.
  • Perform routine HVAC preventive maintenance.
  • Repair and replace cooling coils.
  • Recharge systems to the proper levels of refrigerant.
  • Assist boiler plant mechanics: installs, modifies, repairs, tests, and maintains equipment such as power boilers and associated auxiliary and pollution control equipment.
  • Align motors and pump shafts.

  • Incumbent must possess a valid state driver's license.
  • Incumbent must have Universal Certification for servicing air conditioning and refrigeration equipment-EPA 40 CFR.
  • This position is Mission Essential and is subject to scheduled/unscheduled overtime as well as emergency call back during non duty hours.
  • This position requires a pre-employment physical examination.
  • This is an inclement weather position. The incumbent is expected to make every attempt to report for duty on time and/or remain on duty during inclement weather conditions.
  • Incumbent may be required to wear protective equipment and clothing.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element) WG-08: Ability to do the work of an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic (HVAC) without more than normal supervision: Replacing air conditioning filters, ignition electrodes, and adjusting damper and operating hoists, holders, and pulleys for removing units.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element) WG-10: Ability to do the work of an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic (HVAC) without more than normal supervision: Repairing and installing industrial and domestic air conditioning systems and repair and install refrigeration, heating and ventilation systems.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Air Conditioning Equipment and Heating Equipment. Handles and carries tools, parts, equipment, and testing devices weighting up to 50 pounds, and may occasionally carry heavier objects. Must climb and work from ladders, platforms, and scaffolding to reach parts of systems such as fans, air handling units, water lines, duct work, etc. Work requires stooping, bending, stretching, kneeling, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Motor Vehicle operation. Light physical effort is used in reaching, bending, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to operate hand and foot controls.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed inside, outside, on rooftops, under buildings, and often in cramped areas. Is subject to burns, cuts, electrical shock, respiratory ailments, and to sudden extreme changes in temperature when working on walk-in freezer units. There is risk of irritated eyes, skin, and internal organs as a result of prolonged and repeated exposure to concentrated amounts of toxic refrigerant gases. Wears face masks and protective clothing occasionally when there is a possibility of exposure to toxic refrigerants. Heating Equipment. Work is done primarily inside but occasionally works outside in cramped quarters. Is exposed to gas, smoke, dust, high temperatures, electrical shock, scalding water, and burns from flashes and contact with equipment. May be exposed to asbestos dust while working in and around warm air furnaces, air handlers, boilers, and associated equipment. Wears protective clothing and devices such as goggles, respirators, coveralls, safety shoes, and safety glasses. Work involves exposure to noise levels above 85dB(A), but below 110dB(A), which are reduced by use of hearing protective devices.
