Duties

Help
  • Perform various maintenance worker duties, such as electrical work, masonry, carpentry, painting, mechanical, maintenance, minor welding, and other miscellaneous maintenance work.
  • When necessary, operate chainsaws, winching equipment, etc; perform cleanup of recreation areas as required after replacing gravel, etc.; place riprap and replace boat ramps; drive dump, tool, and similar trucks as required for work support.
  • Handle mooring lines and towing cables; assist towboat operator by giving hand signals; operate winch to raise and lower spuds; deck maintenance; keep engine space free of excess grease and oil; splicing of lines; greasing machinery.
  • Applies trade methods and manual welding processes to repair items that are typically part of lock and dam facility operating equipment.
  • Perform mechanical maintenance such as clean, replace plugs, and general checks on operational status of to maintain various items of equipment and to identify a need for major overhaul or repair.
  • Perform a variety of basic operational checks, tune ups, etc., on various items of equipment such as gasoline engines, chainsaws, generators, etc.
  • Make repairs to existing wiring system that can be accomplished by removing, replacing, tightening, splicing, soldering, and insulating defective wiring, controls, switches and fixtures, etc., using instructions to indicate type of malfunctions.
  • Perform additional duties such as painting, carpentry work, masonry and mechanical maintenance when necessary.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid stateside driver's license.
  • A medical examination is required. If selected, satisfactory completion of a medical examination is required before assignment to the position.
  • Subsequent annual physicals required for the position.
  • Must comply with Drug Abuse Testing Program requirements. This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to applicant testing and random drug testing.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Maintenance Worker without more than normal supervision. To meet the screen out element applicants must show the ability to perform common Maintenance Worker tasks such as welding, maintaining equipment and determining tools, methods and sequence of work upon receipt of work orders. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas:
  • Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision Screen Out
  • Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprint reading)
  • Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment
  • Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc.
  • Knowledge of Materials
  • Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)
  • Use of Measuring Instruments
  • Physical Efforts: This position requires standing, stooping, bending, occasional lifting in excess of 50 pounds, stretching, working in cramped positions and spaces, handling or maneuvering bulky equipment, and general continuous moderate to demanding physical effort.
  • Working Conditions: Work crews are routinely assigned to remote locations not only within the duty location River Project, but also other area projects and potentially other MVD Districts. Work assignments are typically on an ongoing basis and are accomplished within several weeks to months. Employee is required to observe established safe working procedures. Appropriate protective clothing and/or equipment is provided to minimize or eliminate hazardous conditions, and its use is mandatory. Incumbent will be exposed to all weather conditions.
