Summary

This position serves primarily as a Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HV AC) Mechanic. Performs overhaul, installation, maintenance, modification, and repair of various types of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment which is characterized by moderate complexity of design, construction, and function. Provides basic electrical or plumbing repairs, to other that HV AC equipment, when required and must have rudimentary knowledge in these fields.

Primary Duties Include but are not limited to:

  • Provides comprehensive technical support for all air conditioning and refrigeration equipment.
  • Discusses maintenance problems with technical personnel.
  • Exercises skill in interpreting electronic, electrical, and mechanical drawings, specifications, and schematics of custom systems.
  • Provides support for the operating, maintaining, repairing and adjusting HVAC controls systems.
  • Completes work orders and Preventive Maintenance using proper maintenance practices and following manufacturer's recommendations.
  • Maintains complex electronic systems and equipment which are vital to the hospital's ability to provide health care.
  • Takes proper corrective action to restore the device to its fully operational level.
  • Responsible for updating the equipment spare part inventory program when withdrawing from spare part inventory cache to make repairs.
  • Completes work orders and Preventive Maintenance using proper maintenance practices and following manufacturer's recommendations in order to extend the life of equipment.
  • Provides technical support of these systems includes the preventive maintenance, installation, evaluation, troubleshoots, repair, calibration, testing, and modification etc.
  • Employs improvising troubleshooting practices when needed.
  • Performs all work using proper safety practices and Personal Protective Equipment.

  • Must know the principles and theories of air conditioning and refrigeration, temperature measurement, properties of refrigerants.
  • Performs basic electrical and plumbing repairs.
  • Must be skilled in the interpretation and use of engineering drawings, schematics, logic diagrams and mechanical drawings.
  • Responsible for interpretation of regular work requests, assignments and their priorities.
  • Directs an provides technical instruction to less experienced workers when working together.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Position Description Title/PD#: Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic/PD10025A
Physical Requirements: The work requires prolonged standing, climbing up and down ladders and scaffolding, working in cramped or awkward positions while installing items; reaching, lifting and bending while using hand and powered tools; lifting, pushing and pulling objects of varying weights up to 50 pounds. Occasionally lifts or moves moderately heavy objects weighing more than 50 pounds with assistance.
Working Conditions: The incumbent is exposed to extremes of heat and cold, dust, dirt, noise, grease, bad-smelling fumes and moisture, as well as outside the normal indoor environment of the hospital. The work environment includes walk-in refrigerators/freezers, crawl spaces, attics, roofs and interstitial spaces. He/she may occasionally be exposed to: disease, bad weather, possible electric shock, refrigerant gases, danger of falling, hand or power tools, danger from flying splinters/chips, and respiratory ailments. He/she may have frequent exposure to the possibility of scrapes, bums,
bruises, cuts and infections. He/she shall be required to follow proper procedures and wear proper protective equipment to minimize the risks associated with the work being done. The employee is subject to emergency call-back after normal duty hours and on weekends.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated.
