As a Paralegal Specialist in the United States Attorney's Office (USAO), Asset Recovery Division, Financial Litigation Section, you will:
Prepare a variety of substantive legal documents to include motions, foreclosures, garnishments, and other legal actions to effect necessary post-judgment action regarding debts owed to the U.S. government.
Conduct interviews of debtors, employers, and agency officials to determine the effectiveness of pursuing legal action against debtors in default.
Utilize automated legal research tools and public information databases to research legal matters.
Perform full range of collection activities ensuring compliance with the Federal Claims Collection Standards.
Enter case information into a computer database.
Monitor the progress of pending cases and initiate action to insure that legal pleadings, forms, reports, correspondence and other documents are prepared and submitted within established deadlines.
Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.
Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation

Qualifications
GS-7: To be eligible at the GS-7 level, you must meet at least ONE of the following conditions, as defined below: Specialized Experience, Education, OR a combination of Education and Experience.
Specialized experience: One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 level. Specialized experience is defined as experience performing work which provided basic knowledge legal terminology, principles, and concepts. Examples of specialized experience include performing the following types of duties: gathering and summarizing information on specific issues; preparing and reviewing a variety of legal documents for accuracy; verifying citations and statutory references contained in legal documents; locating and reviewing case files and/or other material to obtain status of cases; organize documents and exhibits for pending cases; establishing, maintaining, and closing case files.
Education: A bachelor's degree; AND 1 full year of progressively higher-level graduate education; OR superior academic achievement as follows: 1. A standing in the upper third of your college class or major subdivision at the time you apply. 2. A grade point average of "B" (3.0 on a 4.0 scale) or its equivalent for all courses completed; (a) at the time of application; or (b) during the last two years of undergraduate curriculum. 3. A "B+" (3.5 on a 4.0 scale) or its equivalent for all courses completed in a qualifying major field of study, either; (a) at the time of application; or (b) during the last 2 years of your undergraduate curriculum. 4. Election to membership in one of the national honorary societies (other than freshman societies). Education at the graduate level must be in an accredited college or university and must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of the position.
Combining Education and Experience: Combinations of successfully completed graduate education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. In order to qualify based on a combination, graduate education must be in excess of one full year.

Examples of specialized experience may include the following: preparing and processing a variety of legal documents; conducting research, analysis and summarizing relevant legal precedents for applicability to assigned cases; drafting motions, foreclosures, garnishments, and other legal actions; monitoring cases to ensure deadlines are met; assisting in trial preparation and acting as liaison with other law enforcement agencies for the exchange of information.
Education: One of the following types of education in a related field (e.g., Criminal Justice, Law): a Master's or equivalent graduate degree (such as an LL.B. or J.D.); OR 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree. Education at the graduate level must be in an accredited college or university and must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of the position.
