Operates vessel in local areas in and around harbors, tributaries and rivers and performs assigned missions under adverse conditions such as maneuvering in heavy boat traffic, combating strong winds, tides and currents, etc.
Directs operation of hoisting gear aboard vessel in lifting and/or discharge of drift and debris nets, wreckage and debris from water, supplies and equipment, setting ranges and buoy, dropping and operating drag and sweep bars, driving pilings, etc.
Ensures that slings and rigging are proper and secure, etc.
Aids in docking and undocking of vessel and other floating plants.
Pilots and steers vessels by pilothouse control; requiring the use of navigation aids such as GPS, DGPS, radar, electronic charting, etc.
In charge of the deck and engine room crew including personnel on-the-job training, safety, maintenance, crane operations ,and general vessel business.
Ensures vessel is prepared to sail at all times, is seaworthy, properly crewed and fitted to accomplish the assigned mission.
Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination to ensure the required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs.
This position requires alcohol testing per ER 690-1-1218.
In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations (natural or man-made disaster) the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 11.
This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of up to 25% of the time.
This position requires possession of a current, valid USCG Merchant Marine Credential Master of Less Than 500 Gross Tons Near Coastal Waters license.
