Summary

About the Position: Serves as a Medical Records Technician (Tumor Registry), working closely with a team of other Tumor Registrars in an office setting. The position is mostly sedentary. Incumbent will be using computer, phone, printer, and other common office equipment. Incumbent is expected to interact with physicians, clinicians, epidemiologists, researchers, and others in order to complete tasks and projects.

Duties

Help
  • Assist in compiling and maintaining a comprehensive database utilizing the Automated Central Tumor Registry (ACTUR) of all patients diagnosed and/or treated for cancer.
  • Ensure accuracy and completeness of appropriate staging, coding and inclusion of all pertinent patient data, sufficient to meet the needs and standards of tumor registry operations and to provide data for physicians and researchers.
  • Review standard and electronic patient medical records to identify cases of malignant disease, abstract and code information.
  • Maintain quality assurance of case-finding, abstracting, staging, and coding of data and follow-up procedures.
  • Utilize the ACTUR database to create statistical and narrative reports, and graphic presentations of tumor registry data for use by staff physicians and researchers.
  • Provide assistance to the Oncology Advisory Group and attends multidisciplinary tumor boards.
  • Maintain liaison with staff physicians and allied health professionals; local, state, and national professional organizations.

  • Position requires incumbent to obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance.
  • Position requires incumbent to travel up to 5% of the time.
  • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is therefore subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations.
  • Employees assigned to a medical treatment facility are required to be screened for applicable immunizations or pre-existing immunity based on occupational risk.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
  • This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • Must be able to complete Oncology Data Specialist Certification (ODS-C) within 6 months of appointment.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes assist with maintaining cancer registry records; coding appropriate patient data; and review for accuracy and regulatory compliance.


This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as Healthcare Management.
