Duties

Help
  • Passes instructions on to other workers, ensures that needed tools and material are available, sees that all workers have enough work, and checks work in progress and completed work for compliance.
  • Answers workers questions regarding procedures, policies, written instructions, and directions; trains and demonstrates proper work methods, procedures, and proper usage of materials handling or other equipment.
  • Leads and performs duties that encompass receiving, storing, issuing, conducting inventory counts and location audits, packing, and shipping supplies/equipment/commodities that require special handling, detailed examination, or specific guidelines.
  • Places, stores, maintains, and oversees hazardous materials including toxic chemicals, pesticides, flammables, ammunition, and radioactive materials; serves as a member of the Hazardous Materials Spill Response Team.
  • Develops, implements, and monitors policies and procedures for the proper handling of hazardous goods or sensitive material through custody and shipment.
  • Directs and instructs employees to ensure hazardous goods are processed, packaged, labelled, and documented according to U.S. and host nation laws.
  • Operates material handling equipment (forklifts with a 10,000-15,000 pound lift capability, manual pallet hand trucks, side loaders, tractors, tugs, and other storage/retrieval vehicles) to load, unload, move, transfer, and/or transport material.
  • Assumes custodial responsibility for stock initially received, checked, assembled, and internally transferred to another area; performs temporary space planning of stock location; and assembles stock according to type and/or designated area.
  • Participates in inventories by counting types and quantities of items; resolves discrepancies by checking stock status information in issue requests, receiving and shipping reports, and automated distribution systems.

Qualifications

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Effort: Work requires standing on hard surfaces for extended periods of time, bending, stooping, reaching, and twisting in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts/carries items weighing up to 40 pounds; may lift greater weights with assistance from others or by using materials handling equipment.

Working Conditions: Work is performed within a warehousing area or outside in all kinds of weather. Work areas may be hot, cold, damp, drafty, dirty, dusty, noisy, poorly lit, among other adverse conditions. Exposed to dust, dirt, grease, solvents, and high noise areas; frequently exposed to cuts, scrapes, bruises, falls from ladders, falling material, or injury from equipment. Required to wear safety equipment appropriate for the work area, including but not limited to eye protection, ear protection, respiratory protection, protective clothing, and protective footwear. Other types of protective equipment may be required as deemed necessary by authorized management officials.
