Duties

Help

Perform blood collection procedures by venipuncture and capillary puncture techniques.
Serve as a laboratory receptionist in greeting patients, providing them with appropriate guidance, answering non-technical inquiries, and referring technical inquiries to the appropriate laboratory staff.
Process a variety of specific standardized tests in the areas of chemistry, microbiology, and hematology.
Perform accessioning procedures using the Hospital or Laboratory Informatics Systems (HIS or LIS).
Utilize pre-analytic processing procedures to identify and resolve specimen errors in the medical treatment facilities.
Process a wide variety of laboratory specimens collected in the clinic or received from outlying sites for shipment to civilian or military reference laboratories.

A Personnel Security Investigation is required
This position has specific initial background investigation and periodic re-verification requirements since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age on a recurring basis.
This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
A pre-placement medical examination is required.
Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
Moderate to heavy lifting up to 30 pounds may be required.
Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Red Cross or American Heart Association. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes obtaining specimens (blood, mucus, urine, etc.) for laboratory testing, entering test results into automated systems, and serve as lab receptionist to greet and/or provide guidance to patients. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

OR

Education: Four year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with a major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position, such as, Medical Technology, Health Sciences or Life Sciences.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages
