The Duties of the Position are not limited to the following:

  • Incumbent performs non-complex plumbing work including repairing and installing small water pipes, faucet and drain installation, drainpipe maintenance and repair and related. Completes other plumbing duties by the installation, modification, and repair of utility, supply, and disposal systems, fixtures, fittings, and equipment such as sewage, water, gas, and oil lines, compressed air, vacuum, and acid systems, water closets, water heaters, hydrants, valves, and pumps. Replaces defective pipes that are exposed such as on bathroom fixtures, fittings, and connections.
  • Works independently performing a variety of sub-journey level carpentry trade tasks in the maintenance, remodeling, and repair of equipment at various shop or administrative locations as needed. Plans, performs layout, and accomplishes remodeling, repair or new facilities for offices, shops, storage areas, and equipment, to include, but not limited to assembly of modular and nonmodular office systems, used inside and outside. The incumbent will measure, cut, construct, install, repair, and modify wood, composite, and wood substitute items where specific fit and accuracy are within allowable limits to produce a serviceable product. Accomplishes most types of carpentry work from simple to moderate complexity. Sometimes works from incomplete or only general instructions; also sketches design, determines types of material best suited, and tools required. Carpentry work requires knowledge of standard carpentry methods and techniques, as well as proficiency in reading, writing, adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, and working with simple fractions to plan and measure material according to requirements and dimensions outlined in drawings, blueprints, and instructions. The incumbent installs, maintains and repairs all fire door closures which are electronic and mechanical in nature in all areas of the hospital. Incumbent must be able to perform painting duties, tasks and assignment. May involve assemble of modular and non-modular office systems.
  • Works independently making repairs that can be accomplished by removing, replacing, tightening, splicing, soldering, and insulating defective wiring, controls, equipment, and fixtures such as broken and bare wiring, burned out switches and relays, loose connections and fittings, damaged light fixtures, and poorly operating thermostats. The incumbent receives work orders, oral instructions, and wiring diagrams that indicate the nature of the repair or installation to be made, the layout and placement of circuitry, fixtures, and controls, and the types of wiring, parts, and equipment installed. They locate broken, worn, damaged, or poorly operating wiring, fixtures, controls, and equipment through visual check or through use of a small variety of test equipment, for example, test lamps, voltage testers, ammeters, and polarity testers. They complete needed repairs to installed systems, and rearrange and hook up items such as outlets, switches, light fixtures, regulators, and circuit breakers.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 05/04/2026.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: This position requires incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions, as well walking, standing, bending, lifting, carrying, and pushing or pulling moderately heavy loads. The Maintenance Worker frequently lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds. Occasionally, they lift or move with assistance moderately heavy objects weighing more than 75 pounds. When at a job site, strenuous physical exertion is sometimes required when handling heavy and bulky materials.
