Duties

Help
  • Performs property disposal functions consisting of the receipt, care, temporary storage, control, reissue, and/or other disposition of all items returned as surplus property.
  • Maintains listings of surplus parts and determines if spare or replacement equipment/machinery parts are in stock and included within disposals.
  • Prepares reports of unserviceable items and recommends methods for disposal.
  • Compiles statistical reports and financial inventory documents on excess and surplus property and disposition actions taken.
  • Recognizes surplus properties that may affect the health and safety of others, such as chemicals, hazardous materials, or waste, and ensures appropriate handling, adherence to storage time limitations, and proper labeling for disposal.

  • Must successfully pass pre-employment requirements prior to appointment.
  • May be required to serve a one-year probationary period.
  • Must undergo a background investigation for Suitability.
  • Selectee will be required to work overtime, as needed.
  • Physical Demands: Requires some physical exertion, such as standing, walking over rough or uneven surfaces, bending, stretching, reaching, lifting of moderately heavy items and average agility and dexterity.
  • Work Environment: Work is frequently performed in an office setting, shop, and warehouse. May be exposed to dirt, dust, and the possibility of injury from falling or dropped stock and exposure to cuts, bruises, and lacerations may exist.
  • TIME-IN-GRADE REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must meet time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. Applicants must have served 1 year at the next lower grade level (PG-6) or equivalent grade level of Federal service to qualify.

Qualifications

To qualify for the Property Disposal Technician, PG-1107-7, you must meet the following requirements:

Applicants must possess one year of specialized experience that is equivalent to at least the PG-6 grade level in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector, which includes:

(1) Maintaining records on surplus items and recommending methods for disposal.
(2) Preparing property descriptions to conduct surplus property sales.
(3) Compiling reports and financial inventory documents related to excess and surplus property.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement (04/30/2026) to be considered.

Substitution of education in lieu of specialized experience may not be used at this grade level.

Background Investigation for Suitability:
To ensure the accomplishment of its mission, the GPO requires every employee to be reliable and trustworthy; this position requires a background investigation for Suitability. To meet those standards, all selected applicants must undergo and successfully complete a background check for Suitability. This review could include fingerprints and credit checks, as well as a full field FBI background investigation and tax and bar checks for attorney applicants. The background investigation covers a period of seven to ten years depending on the nature of the position; this process may take 6 weeks or longer. The Agency may rescind the tentative offer, if the candidate is unable to pass the background investigation.

Schedule A (Disability Appointment):
Documentation of eligibility for employment under Schedule A can be obtained from a licensed medical professional (e.g., a physician or other medical professional certified by a state, the District of Columbia, or a U.S. territory to practice medicine); a licensed vocational rehabilitation specialist (i.e., state or private); or any Federal agency, state agency, or agency of the District of Columbia or a U.S. territory that issues or provides disability benefits. The letter must be printed on a "medical professional's" letterhead and signed.
