Duties

Help
  • Functions in a combined ophthalmology/optometry clinic whose services include examination, diagnosis, triage and treatment of injuries and disorders of the eye by surgical and medical means.
  • Arranges and maintains scheduling of surgical patients.
  • Coordinates with the operating room and surgery personnel for the appropriate setup of lighting, equipment, instruments, window coverings, and all other preliminaries for surgery.
  • Under the direction of the surgeon, ensures setup of all solutions, medications, and the local anesthesia mixtures by the operating room staff.
  • Serves as first surgical assistant and as scrub assistant to the surgeon in surgical procedures.
  • During the procedure, is responsible for the setup of equipment used for cataract extraction, vitreous cutting and aspiration, retinal diathermy and cryopexy, tissue cautery, and any other intraoperative equipment setups as directed by the surgeon
  • Assists surgeon with laser vision corrective surgery. Prepares room equipment, laser, administrative issues, and patients for surgery.
  • Performs setup of patient, instruments and other equipment using sterile techniques as appropriate.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must obtain and/or maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) training and certification that is sponsored or endorsed by the American Heart Association (AHA). Current Advanced Life Support or other advanced certification does not supersede BLS.
  • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is therefore subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations.
  • All employees assigned to a medical treatment facility are required to be screened for applicable immunizations regardless of series, based on occupational risk, and are subject to missing/required immunizations.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position is Inclement Weather Essential. This means that you must be willing to make every attempt to report for duty on time and/or remain on duty during severe weather conditions.
  • A pre-employment physical is required.
  • This position has specific initial background investigation and periodic re-verification requirements since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age on a recurring basis.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes assisting with medical procedures related to ophthalmology/optometry; setting up medical equipment for medical procedures; and triaging and treating eye injuries or disorders. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

Certified Ophthalmic Asst, Ophthalmic Tech, Ophthalmic Medical Tech (COMT), and Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) desired but not required.

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
