Duties

Help
  • Plan day to day, project by project, up to weekly and monthly work schedules and sequence of operations for subordinates.
  • Establish deadlines and priorities on the basis of general work schedules and methods and policies established by higher levels of supervision.
  • Determine how many assignments can be done concurrently, which ones must be delayed, and the number and types of employees needed, considering skills, personnel, materials, and equipment available and required.
  • Select workers and assign tasks to be performed; explain work requirements, methods, and procedures; instruct subordinates in new procedures; and provide advice when problems arise.
  • Review work in progress or upon completion, adjusting plans, assignments, and methods as necessary to accomplish the work as effectively and economically as feasible.
  • Develop performance standards, counsel employees on performance, and make formal and informal performance appraisals, and review job descriptions for currency and accuracy and make necessary changes.
  • Delegated full responsibility for the proper use, field maintenance, safety, and security of floating plant and other equipment/property assigned to his/her control in order to accomplish regular and special work projects.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must possess a valid State motor vehicle operator's license for the class of vehicle being operated based on site specific, job related requirements, and must maintain this license.
  • Drives a personal or government vehicle to travel to and from site visits at various locations to perform inspections of maintenance activities. Travels on public roads and highways in all kinds of weather.
  • A medical examination is required. If selected, satisfactory completion of a medical examination is required before assignment to the position.
  • One year supervisory trial period may be required.
  • May be required to comply with Drug Abuse Testing Program requirements. If so, this position will be a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to applicant testing and random drug testing.
  • Temporary Duty Travel (TDY) may be required up to 75% of the time.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Crane Operator Supervisor without more than normal supervision. To meet the screen out element, applicants should document experience and/or show the ability to perform common tasks as a member of a team that provides overall field maintenance and repair work operations. I can provide some leadership experience involving repair and maintenance or construction activities and can lead groups of workers to accomplish tasks on time. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed.- Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • Work Practices (includes keeping things neat, clean, and in order)
  • Physical Effort: This position requires standing, stooping, bending, occasional lifting in excess of 50 pounds, stretching, working in cramped positions and spaces, handling or maneuvering bulky equipment, and general continuous moderate to demanding physical effort.
  • Working Conditions: Work crews are routinely assigned to remote locations within the Mississippi River Project, from Guttenberg, IA to Saverton, MO, and may work at other locations as needed anywhere within the Mississippi Valley Division (MVD); or within the Illinois Waterway Project, from Joliet, IL to Versailles, IL, as well as the Chicago district from Chicago, IL to Lockport, IL. Work assignments are typically on an ongoing basis and are accomplished within several weeks to months. Employee is required to observe established safe working procedures. Appropriate protective clothing and/or equipment is provided to minimize or eliminate hazardous conditions, and its use is mandatory. Incumbent will be exposed to all weather conditions.
